Can someone help explain why they chose bypass over sleeve? My surgeon is leaving the decision up to me and I'm not sure which one would be better.

They are very different. With bypass you can not eat sugar, carbs, stay on high Protein until you lose 75% of your weight and you can only eat 3 tablespoons of food at one time. I know me, if I had the chance I would eat the sugar and defeat the purpose of having surgery. The one person I know that had sleeve lost 50 of the 100 they wanted to lose and then started putting the weight back on.

Please keep researching. The information given by the above poster was not entirely accurate. Hopefully you will get more and better responses here. You might also check the asmbs.org website. That is the professional organization for bariatric surgeons nationwide and has a lot of good info.

Hi. I almost went for the sleeve (hence my user name) but changed to the bypass. Many reasons but mostly because there's so much data behind the bypass and it's still considered the Gold Standard of WLS. I've posted here a lot about my choice but what absolutely helped me decide was the fact that there are people on this site already revising from sleeve to bypass. Good luck with your decision :-)

I went with bypass for several reasons. There is more long term data behind bypass. My doc thought I would have better results with it. I liked the idea of it being the final surgery. I liked the caloric malabsorption.

As far as the other poster who said you can only eat 3 tablespoons of food at a time or the you can no longer have sugar or carbs. That Is not the case with me. I am 15 months post op and enjoy any food. The biggest difference is portions. I can eat everything I used to, the difference is if I choose to. We all need to have a chance to eat freely and with time you can after bypass. The trick is understanding this is a tool and you can misuse your tool.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
