what are the pros and cons of this surgery

Recommended Posts

my 2nd to my last appointment is this Monday and I know a bunch of information but maybe there is stuff I missed. I'm especially interested in hearing the cons. It makes me less nervous to know everything without surprises.

Pros: I eat less, lost lots of weight, can do stuff I hadn't been able to do in years, have bloodwork that is in the perfect range, have less stress on my joints, spend less time at various medical appointments, etc. etc. Cons: I eat less and spent money getting a new wardrobe. No other cons for me.

Pros: losing all excess weight and keeping it off, being normal weight, more energy, healthy, sexy, living a longer life.

Cons: You have to make sure that you are committed to make a permanent life change. Exercise, eating the right foods in small quantities. It is not easy but the rewards are tremendous!!

The biggest con for me is overcoming my old eating habits. When I'm bored, it is tough not to want to eat, just to have something to do. It would be very easy to overeat if I didn't keep a careful watch over that old habit.

I had mine on Monday. I have experienced 2 cons so far. 1) Recovery has been more physically painful than I thought it would be. 2) I also had to go without my antidepressants while in the hospital, which gave me an unbearable headache, even with tons of morphine. I went home Tuesday evening, and the first thing I did was take an antideressant. The headache finally went away. After surgery, you aren't allowed to have anything by mouth until they do the xray test to look for leaks, which is why I had to go without antidepressants. If you aren't on anything like that going into the surgery, then it won't be a problem for you.

why couldn't you take your antidepressants? I need meds to sleep so hopefully they allow them =\

They wait to give you anything by mouth just in case there are leaks in the stomach. I think it was the next day before they did the leaks test.

I think the anaesthesia plus the IV drugs afterwards will probably keep you nice and sleepy. Good luck with it all.

Cons: there is a point that I reached on the full liquid stage that I just hated life. I accerated soft food by one day, and felt so much better!

This process is a huge mind game, sometimes I win, sometimes I eat a little of what I shouldn't. But it isn't the same as before. It's one bite, instead of a whole thing. (Cake)

The pros far outweigh any con I could come up with though.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
