I reintroduced myself to the gym today

Recommended Posts

My surgery is 4 weeks from tomorrow. **GASP** I know that being in better physical shape (not the round shape I am today), will help with the recovery from VSG. With that said, I turned on my GPS and drove the 2 miles to my gym (note sarcasm). I haven't been to the gym in months because I've been on 6 month pity party and I haven't wanted to go. I've been doing some walking, but not enough. Again, that pity party thing getting in the way.

I have been having this internal dialogue with myself the past few weeks about going to the gym. I tell myself I'm going to wake up early and go, but that hasn't happened. I'll go on my lunch hour, but something always comes up, so I don't go. Forget about after work, there's entirely too much going on, I'm far too busy. (This hasn't stopped me from reading a book or watching my favorite TV shows or cooking a kick-a$$ meal for the fam.)

So, today I did it - I went to the gym and did 20 minutes on the elliptical and 25 on the treadmill. It wasn't a lot, but I worked up a sweat and my heart was beating. It felt really good, especially after a really bad morning at work. I feel more mentally alert and feel like I can better tolerate the stupidity going on at work.

I hope this is the beginning a beautiful relationship between the gym and me.

Good for you! I did the same thing. Six weeks ago I started working out with a personal trainer. I have surgery is two weeks. I feel so much stronger and more prepared for surgery because I hit the gym first. I hope you get the same payoff!

Good for you! I'm exercising at home but am scared to join a gym. I promised myself that I will FORCE myself to do it once I get under 200 lbs.

I really lucked out and found a personal trainer who trains out of her home. It was the perfect fit for me. I am convinced that it's going to make surgery recovery a little easier.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
