How much do your tastes change post-op? Still crave the same things?

Recommended Posts

Did you try a favorite food after surgery and not just like it or it didn't agree with you? Did you simply not crave the unhealthy stuff anymore? Also how long before you felt like your tastes had changed

For me, food started tasting bland after a few weeks but soon returned to normal. I no longer crave the old carbs I used to love - hamburgers, fries, fried pies, Pasta, rice. I don't know if it is because of the surgery or if it was the forced sugar detox I went through the weeks post-op.

I think my taste buds went cold-turkey for 3 months and now healthy stuff (beans, lentils, yellow squash...) tastes really good and I look forward to eating it. :-P

I haven't had the desire to eat any fast food in the past 10 months. I was craving a hamburger really bad during the pre-op liquid diet and promised myself one as soon as I was back on regular foods. But I still haven't cared enough to go get it.

I'm only 6 weeks out, but I still crave the same things. Hoping it changes the further out I get. :(

I'm 7 wks out and have none of my old cravings! Thank God! I'm prayn they don't come back either. I was a sweet eater and fast food hound I've thought about both when "head hunger" rears her nasty head but have tasted neither one. I just made zucchini brownies yesterday and have not ate one!! It's weird...

I am 3 months out and I still have some craving! I do not deny myself and I usually have a bit or two and I am satisfied!! I was a low BMI to start and I have done well with my weight loss!

I crave sweets still, even though I worked hard to break the sugar addiction during pre-op. It's just who I am. So, I am not having sweets at all, other than the sugar-free/no sugar added things I am allowed, because I know I will crave real sugar even more. Carbs are interesting - my head likes the idea of having some, but I don't feel like I need it. So, for now, I'm playing the avoidance game!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
