Dehydrated?

Recommended Posts

How do you know if you're dehydrated? And if so, how did you fix it or did you need to get iv fluids? I've had a bad headache all day, have been very thirsty, feel week and am very shaky. Guessing I'm dehydrated but I'm not sure what to do about it.

I had a headache a few days after surgery, but thought it was just the medication working its way out of my system. Keep track of your fluids. Try for a minimum of 64 oz a day. I wish you well!

In the old days we used to take salt tablets ( working in desert sun in northern Australia). These days you might think of the electrolite fortified sports drinks that athletes use. I'm on diuretics for hypertension and Fluid retention - i guess there will come a time when my doctor reduces these to balance with my improving health.... One can always hope!

Thank you! I'm 5 months out now but this is the first time I've felt this way. Fluids are definitely my hardest thing to get in.

How far out from surgery are you? It's pretty easy to get dehydrated, especially early on, but I've seen folks on here seven, nine months out that had issues as well. I've never been dehydrated to the point I have needed an IV, but for your symptoms, I would suggest a trip to the ER for fluids. IV's aren't that bad, and you'll be feeling better soon. If you want to try something else, try G2 (low sugar Gatorade), Powerade zero to give you some electrolytes. I try to get a few bottles of that in a week just as a precaution.

I am 5 months out and this is my first experience feeling dehydrated. I'm going to try some G2. I just wasn't sure what was the point where most people decided they needed iv fluids.

What made you decide you needed to get iv Fluid? Anything besides the dizziness?

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
