2 weeks post op - hungry, gaining, eating the same amount as before?

Recommended Posts

Hey all!

I know the drill (dont look at the scale during healing, focus on healing, etc etc).

But I'm only 2 weeks 2 days post op, I'm hungrier than before, I'm eating as much as before (which wasn't a lot but my body gains on 1200 calories so I'm gaining weight), feeling no restriction, no pain, or full.

I'm mostly fussy because before surgery I had told them that I really wanted to go without a fill for as long as possible, and then they tell me after surgery that they put a large band in me - I honest to God feel as though they did it so I would have to get fills. I have another 4 weeks before I'm allowed to get a fill. They told me that there would be an issue if I gained weight on my next appointment.

Did ANYONE have this feeling at just 2 weeks after surgery? This seems insane. Did it subside after a bit?

Welcome to the post op phase referred to as "Bandster Hell". Known for the time before fills when a bandster heals, and hunger returns.

It is important for you to continue to follow the eating rules given to you by your surgeon so that you will not stretch your pouch. Yes, this does eventually get easier to cope with, but some people never get to the green zone, and have to take more responsibility for their compliance with eating the way and in the amounts which your surgeon advised you to.

Just because you can eat more than the prescribed portion does not mean that you should.

Best wishes for a successful journey...

Hi there!

I am 9 days post op and I gained 2 pounds as well. I feel as though as soon as I started the mushie stage my body was starting to switch out of the starvation mode it was on during the liquid diet. I think all our bodies need time to adjust (i hope) to the band. I mean, if I'm eating 700-800 calories a day, there should be no reason that I should gain weight right? It's impossible.

Try adding more physical activity in your day? Today I went grocery shopping and felt like I had a work out because since surgery I've barely walked more than 50 feet in one day.

You're not alone!

Nicole

I guess I just thought it would take longer for this "bandster hell" to begin. Ugh! 2 weeks! Miserable.

I refused to weigh myself after surgery !! I let the Dr office do it on my follow up appt. I still lost...but I was swollen and bloated still..u may just be retaining fluid...my hunger has returned however now that I'm eating pureed food it fills me up and I'm ok for a few hours...my main thing was to try and keep busy so I didn't focus on being hungry and that helped...hope it gets better for you ! I'm ready for my first fill but I have to wait till 11/7 (6wks) grr

Remember, the first 6 weeks are for healing, it's very common not to lose much weight during this time. Also, I know you're hungry, but makes sure you're following your doctors guidelines for the post op diet. At 2 weeks, I was just starting to introduce mushy foods (but I know this can differ from dr to dr). Hang in there, it'll get easier.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
