Did I make the right decision?

Recommended Posts

Hello

I am new here.

I was going to have the gastric sleeve surgery, it was scheduled for October 23, so I was told to go for my blood work and see the dietician on Monday the 30th of Sept. I did that, when I went to meet with the dietician and I told her I was having the sleeve done she mentioned to me that since I already have acid reflux that the sleeve would not be a good choice for me, and that the roux en y surgery would be better. She said she has seen so many people get worse as far as acid reflux and that she would hate for this to happen to me. I had never been told this before.

When I got home I called my surgeons office and asked if this is true and they confirmed that is was. I decided to change the type of surgery I was having to the roux en y gastric by pass. So now everything had to be resubmitted to my insurance company to get approval again for the new surgery request.

Has anyone here ever done this, and was it approved by your insurance co? Did I make the right choice? I was told that my surgery date will now change. I am disappointed by that, but I guess I've waited this long, I can wait a little longer.

Any comments would be appreciated.

I did not go through the same process (insurance) but I was suggested RNY by my surgeon because of the reflux... he said the same thing your nut said, it you have it, it gets worse, if you don't have it, you might get it with the sleeve. I am as happy as can be with my RNY, have no more reflux since surgery, so best decision ever. I am 6 months out, have lost 92 lbs and have dropped 6 sizes. I hope your insurance company approves soon. C'ya in the losers bench!! ;)

If you have a good case manager there shouldn't be any problem, just the procedure changed and there is a good explaination as to why. Your insurance company probably doesn't want to pay for this again and that is what would happen with your reflux problem and having the sleeve. I know a lot of people want the sleeve, because they can continue eating sweets and fats without an issue. But when I had to decide whether to have the sleeve or RNY, I did a lot of research, because I didn't do that with the band which had to be removed (trust me I didn't have one bit of a problem with the band) but later found out the failure rate and had I known I would have gone with RNY to begin with. The sleeve is newer than the band and for me there wasn't enough research done on its good points and its bad points. RNY has been around for at least 30 years and it has a proven track record. Don't think you will have a problem with RNY, just follow your doctor's instructions. Had my surgery 9/11 and have lost a pound a day. But didn't have but 50lbs to lose so I will be slower in losing which is okay with me.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
