What do you do for headaches?

Recommended Posts

I suffer from headaches alot, have for years. The best thing i have found is Excedrine. The problem is that it contains caffeine, and I'm told no more caffeine after the surgery. And of course it will be a while after the surgery before i can swallow pills. Any suggestions?

Apply an ice pack to the painful area of your head. Try placing it on your forehead, temples, or the back of your neck.

Take a warm bath or shower;

take a nap; or take a walk.

Ask someone to rub your neck and back, or treat yourself to a massage.

Apply gentle, steady rotating pressure to the painful area of your head with your index finger and/or thumb. Maintain pressure for seven to 15 seconds, then release. Repeat as needed.

Rest, sit, or lie quietly in a low-lit room. Close your eyes and try to release the tension in your back, neck, and shoulders.

If you have excessive muscle contractions in the neck, it may be helpful to perform physical therapy exercises every day.

They told me tylenol was o.k. and they actually sent me home from the hospital on 9/7 with a prescription for for hydrocodone with acetaminophen. I've had 2 headaches and it took care of both of them right away. Swallowing pills has been o.k. for me post-op.

Excedrin not only has caffeine but it has aspirin so definitely watch out. They told me aspirin is a big no no before and even after surgery unless I consult with the doctor.

Good luck and keep us posted

I suffer from Migraines, have been since high-school. I take Tylenol only. If it gets bad, I use my trusty liquid Lortab that I have kept for bad days.

Has anyone had a decrease in headaches or Migraines since surgery? I used to get migraines 3-4 times a week and now I can't even remember the last time I had a headache.

I hope my migraines go away after RNY. I cant imagine suffering through them without my excedrine. Its the only thing that works for me.

Mine went away!! I used to get a mother of a monster Migraine once every 3 weeks but really horrible vomiting relentlessly had to be taken to emergency hospital numerous times. Also daily headaches.

It stopped immediately after surgery. Only light headaches once every 2 weeks or so. And only had one migraine since the op (i have been post op for 5 months). And i think it was my own fault brought on by not eating for a whole day and then going out until late night living it up and then period started and it was just a mess.

So yeah i hope it works for you as well but rny really changed my life!

I've had a decrease in aches and pains in general. Before I was practically living on Aleve for chronic back pain, knee pain, foot pain, shoulder pain, and headaches. Since I could only take Acetaminophen for the rest of my life I was very concerned about pain management. Within two months the question was not 'What to take for pain?' The question was 'What pain?' :-)

Fiorecet is now my best friend when I get Migraines. I use to never leave the house without exedrin. That was my biggest fear post surgery that I would never get to take exedrin again. The fiorecet has worked great!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
