Was thinking sleeve but now thinking Bypass

Recommended Posts

Hello All! I was banded in '09 and was having issues as well as not losing and gaining even being tight. My Dr. want me to convert to either sleeve or bypass (sleeve being his preference I believe). Anyway it was my preference. I was scheduled for pre-op this week and band removal on the 6th of this month. Due to my B/P that's too high, He wants me to get a clearance from my personal Dr. I'm glad I took time to check out these posts while waiting for my appt. b/c I'm finding out that there are some folks that still have to have bypass after being sleeved. I regret that I chose the band over bypass anyway, so even though my Dr. said that I could still convert to bypass if the sleeve doesn't work out, Why not just go with the bypass. Anyone else feel this way? I need help with this b/c my weight is at 215 right now and my diabetes is climbing along w/ all of my other numbers.

I was banded in 2010, never had a problem except with the WL Clinic so went to a new one in 2013. They found the band had slipped and had it out 5/23/13. The surgeon left it up to me whether the sleeve or bypass, so I asked which one he would recommend. He said the bypass, reasoning is because of the success rate of (they say cure and I say remission) of diabetes. The sleeve has some good results but because you can continue to eat carbs and sweets, etc. it isn't as successful. All my research also says bypass is the gold standard and the most researched. So I'm having bypass but finishing up by three months weight management, so hopefully I'll have it in September. Of course the decision is yours, but do you really want to go yet through another surgery if the sleeve doesn't work, it is even newer than the band, so not much research coming in on the success rate or complications. Those are my thoughts though.

I was a band to bypass and my doc really pushed the sleeve...when I explained my logic he backed off.

Hi oldoneyoungagain, I'm leaning more towards bypass now b/c I don't want to have any more surgeries if the sleeve is not successful. The more I think about it, the better bypass sounds to me. Thanks!

SoccerMoma, He is leaving it up to me as well. Yes, the bypass does make better since and Im sure your logic is the same as what I'm thinking. Soooo sorry I didn't take this route at first.

I'm also band to bypass and my surgeon also was pushing for me to do the sleeve but I insisted on the bypass and so far I'm very happy with my choice its been a little less than 3 and a 1/2 months and I'm down 64lbs :)

I'm not a revision, but when I first started this journey, I was adamant that I watned the sleeve. Less invasive, no malabsortion issues, things like that. But after talking with the surgeon, I decided bypass. I was not happy with the idea of still being able to eat the carbs and sweets. That's what got me in this situation to begin with. The bypass limits more of what you can eat at a time. And I didn't like the idea of possibly another surgery down the road.

I've learned that wheather you have diabetes or not, it's better to go with the bypass to avoid further weight loss surgeries down the road.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
