Calling Dr. C......

Dr. C,

I have been to the site several times and found your advise most usefull. I was banded 4/06. I currently have 1.6 cc in a 4cc band. I have been struggling to get any restriction on the band since my first fill which was at the 6 wk post op visit. I have been plagued w/either severe GERD sx, chest pain or vomiting everytime I attempt to get past the 1.6 cc marker. At present I have very little restriction and will occasionally still continue to vomit. I am on Zegerid 40mg twice daily, Reglan 5 mg three times daily and this is for the most part controlling the GERD sx. My motility studies were normal. I have been battling gastritis and show that I am refluxing on the Bravo ph study done. Prior to surgery I had no problems w/GERD sx. H-pylori testing was normal (the plan is to tx for H-pylori despite the negative testing to see if this helps) My surgeon is frustruated as well as I. I have lost 80 lbs but w/o the help of the band, just being sick. I am scared of losing the band. Any help/advise you could offer as to what direction to steer me in would be great. Oh and by the way is it normal for a port to be uncomfortalble for so long after surgery. Thank you in advance for any help you might offer me.

My guess is that you have a hiatal hernia. It's difficult to prove with standard testing though once you have a band.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
