I was taking meds in tablet and capsule form in the hospital the day of surgery but you should call your surgeon and ask. They are all different.

I was taking them my 3rd day out from surgery. I have never been told to crush or break my pills. Ever. I did dissolve the pain pills....but that was just so they would work faster.

My surgeon said as long as the pill is smaller than a tick tack, you can swallow it whole. If not, it must be broken up. The issue is that, jf you take bigger pills, we don't have the stomach acid to dissolve them well so they sit in your pouch and start eating away at your stomach lining and that's how you get ulcers. Also, they may pass undigested and you are not gonna get all the benefits you need from your meds.

i always thought i wasn't allowed to swallow pills for a few weeks for fear of it getting stuck in my oesophagus.

Yes, I'm on antis right now and I break them in half. It tastes terrible! It's a sulfa drug and just.....dissolves at contact with the Fluid. Ugh.

I was scared to swallow them at first, but I made sure with my surgeon and he seemed confident that my pouch and I would be cool.

I took whole pills on the day after surgery, in the hospital. Glad I never had to crush, yuck!

It's strange how different drs are! I had to crush my meds for the first month (I'm only on week 5). He gave me liquid pain meds though. At a month we could swallow meds, as long as they weren't huge. However our Vitamins, Calcium, B12 etc all have to be chewable for at least the first 8 weeks.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
