Pre-op panic and eating the wrong things....

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!

So I was wondering... Did or does anyone else tend to get really anxious about their upcoming surgery and start eating all the wrong things? I've been very active and eating right for the most part. I take part in 3 movement classes per week and I walk everywhere. I am in a very active graduate program so that certainly helps!

I find myself getting into this "oh I can eat this now because I'll never be able to eat it again" frame of mind. Can anyone relate? :(

I can totally relate. My surgery is March 21st and I've been totally anxious and eating stuff I shouldn't be touching.

Eat it now because you definitly cant later. I wish I would have had more last meals

Ha! It's funny you say "last meal" as it's what my mother keeps telling me. I love sushi and keep reading that it doesn't mix well with WLS. I mean it sucks, but I'm more excited about living a healthier life than losing sushi.

I guess my biggest thing is soda. I won't lie, I really enjoy it. I've weaned myself off but still find myself having cravings. I'll get through it!

I definitely have the panic part down pat but I have been perfect on my diet. When I panic I get OCD and start to clean and control everything around me...so my diet has been one of the lucky consequences of my control freak nature!! Lol it has been beneficial though too as I have lost 33 lbs in 6 weeks.

Before I began my liver shrink, I had my 'last rights' dinner and it was Sushi and it was as wonderful as ever thought it could be. I agree, I think we will all find happiness in other things than food & I'm looking forward to that part.

I hope to start my pre-op diet here in a few weeks and I have been struggling with everything especially soda. I know that I can't have it after so I'm trying to get in as much as I can. I know that I shouldn't and stay away but I just can't. I really hope that things change after the surgery because I don't want food to rule my day as it does now. I strive to be like Gurlygirlrcr80 and think like JenP. Oh the mind games we play as we get closer to our surgery date. You are not alone as I think we all struggle with being anxious during this process.

I had two days of food funerals before I started the preoperative diet. It was great, but the only bad thing was the second day of Clear Liquids, I got a serious withdrawl headache that developed into a full blown Migraine, complete with vomiting. I don't know if it was sugar, caffeine, carbs in general, or what but if I had it to do over I would have started earlier and scheduled off work a few days pre-op.

I plan to be off work for the cleared liquid part of my pre-op diet. I have the same fear that I will have a complete meltdown before my surgery....mostly withdrawing from things.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
