Band to Bypass Buddy

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm Danielle and I am one of the MANY people who need to have a revision surgery.

I had my band put in in July 2009. There were many ups and downs but I landed in the 40% EWL category. I still had 90lbs to go, but after discussing it with a different bariatric surgeon... He broke the news to me: (+)65% of all Lap Bands will fail in the first 6 years, and his case load carries more then 90 revisions a year.

I was relieved to hear that it wasn't "Me" who failed; it was the band that failed.

You see... I have a DIRE need to lose my weight. I have no co-morbidities, however, at 32 years old I have had 2 major back surgeries. In August 2012, I had a spinal fusion. My neurosurgeon explained that once you get one fusion, each subsequent disc will continue to deteriorate until my entire back is fused... Screws, rods, plates and all.

My motivation is to not be crippled with another spinal fusion every 2 years until I am completely disabled at the age of 40.

I am here in order to utilize EVERY POSSIBLE TOOL I can find, as well as, be here to support others.

Thanks for taking the time to read my story.

***my official surgery date is Feb. 21, 2013 @ 7:30am***

Gootmy RNY Monday after having my band urgently removed in August. Surgery itself was not that bad...tired and run down but pain really not such a big deal. Getting rid of that band was a little piece of heaven!!!!

HW 312, pre-op (lap-band) 294, pre-op (RNY) 255, surgery date 2/11/13, goal weight 154, current weight 240

Hi everyone!!! Sorry for the sluggish reply.

Surgery went well! Dr was very pleased with everything. He said I had more scar tissue then anticipated, but was able to clean it up nicely. My stay in the hospital was a cake walk.

HOWEVER, not 2 days after being released I started to come down with (what I thought was) a cold. Within 36 hours, I had the flu! Booooo... The sneezing and coughing was causing so much pain and discomfort that I was unable together ANY fluids down. Tuesday was the first day if being beaten up by the flu bug, and by Friday afternoon, I was told by my Dr to get back to the hospital for fluids. I was in the hospital for 45hours being pumped full of fluids.

Dr said it was pretty bad. But Sunday I was released feeling much better!!!

I was weighed before I left and I had lost 8lbs since my Pre-op check in weight. Dr told me that I is more, but because I'm packed full of fluids they wouldn't be able to get an accurate reading.

No problem! I can still handle 8lbs. Lol

Hi Everyone. I had a lap band done in 2009 and an RNY revision done May 13, 2013. Discharged after an overnight stay. My only complication was a throat and apparent prostate infection. Both were resolved with a short course of antibiotics. Can't wait to move to mushy foods tomorrow. To Still Misbehavin. I've had two cervical fusion operations: C5-C7 then C4-C5. Never had problems with that but as you state, the areas above and below the fusions start to deteriorate. My last surgery was six weeks prior the Rny. aA disk replacement C3-C4. It was supposed to be better than another fusion. I have had more issues with this than with any other surgery. Chronic pain and pinched nerve-like discomfort. If you can avoid all of that, good. Try cortisone injections first if you have more problems.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
