I'm 60. Anyone else over 50 doing RNY?

Recommended Posts

I am 70 and just had it done on Monday. It was a revision from the Gastric Sleeve that I had about 10 years ago.
Was the bypass harder to get used to? I also am revising from the sleeve because of a hiatal hernia and terrible acid reflux.

I have friends as a couple.. both had it done, husband and wife and they are both doing great. In over a years time he has lost over 150 lbs and she has lost 80 lbs. No issues. They eat the foods they liked before ….just can't do allot of it due to pouch size.. they of course do minimal grease and minimal sugars.

That is the reason I got it done. And also as my sleeve was not stopping food quantities, but mostly because of the hernia/reflux issue.

Bit early to say how it is going. I am only just over a week out of surgery and still on liquid/mushies. Since I went on the pre-operation diet, I’ve lost over 6 kgs (about 13.5 lbs). I guess I won’t know until I can start eating normal food.

Trying to keep the Protein up at the moment of course.

I think the Roux N Y was harder to get used to than the sleeve. My husband had the Roux N Y in 2000. He ate for a month I believe the mushy food.. I put everything for the blender for him except for mashed potatoes and sugar free pudding. He found he really liked Mexican tortilla Soup.

He had terrible indigestion and bad breath for a long time as I recall. All part of the process I believe. He really had to train himself to eat slow.. not easy for him.. since if he eats too fast.. it would get stuck in his stoma and he would have to force himself to urp it up and that was painful. Slow and easy.

I am two weeks post op at the moment and still on liquids and liquid mushies (soup mushed up etc). I still have a lot of shoulder pain - the doctor said it is due to diaphragm issues. I also have a pain like a severe stitch mostly on the left side, and due to food restrictions am very weak.

I am looking forward to gradually improving.

Hi, OzCaz.

You are in the trenches no doubt. I feel for you. Suffered with my husband when he went through that. I don't understand the shoulder pain unless that is just how your body is dealing with it.. what kind of concerns me more is when you speak about a pain like a severe stitch on the left side.. is that the side they put your band? That is something I would definetly talk to your doctor about and if you should be having that kind of pain two weeks after the fact.. you don't have any kind of redness or sign of injection at the surgical site do you? Not trying to be doc here.. but you don't want to wait too long if something is not right?

Thanks for worrying about me AZRider. I never had a band. I only had a sleeve about 10 years ago.

I did speak to my doctor yesterday and he told me he thinks it is OK and to keep monitoring and let him know if it gets worse. It hasn’t yet.

And only just over a week post op at the moment - it was late Monday last week.

I see all those issues as positive.. having to eat smaller and slower and puree for longer that's what I'm looking for I'll be staying on liquids and puree long as I can when time comes! I love Protein shakes..

Not sure how to reply to just one poster at a time? For OzCaz.. I will try not to worry about you.. but I will be curious to how you come along.

For Mikeyy.. good you like the Protein shakes.. which ones are you using that don't have high sugar as I would be curious for my hubby since I can't remember from 20 years ago what we gave him for protein early in the game just after surgery that wasn't high sugar since at that time it was a real no no.. he still can't do any real sugar at this stage of game either.. though he does tolerate sugar better than any form of grease.

I am using IsoWhey - I found Optifast too high in sugar and didn’t like the taste.

Currently having a smoothie with a banana and a few berries, lite milk and IsoWhey.

I am in Australia, but I’m sure IsoWhey is a worldwide thing.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
