I'm 60. Anyone else over 50 doing RNY?

Recommended Posts

I'm 53 and doing great on day 3 of my 2 week pre-op diet. My hubby and I adopted our children a little later in life...so I have an 11 and 13 year old and I need to be able to keep up with them and be around for them in a vital active way. My mobility has tanked over the last 8 months due to arthritic knee and leg issues from a pinched nerve. I can't walk without pain. I NEED this to live and to live well. I have lots of travel to do yet and many things in this world to show my kids. Without this surgery I fear I wouldn't have many good years left nor the ability to do any of it.

And Claricey I am tree-top proud of you and there is another true-gold lady I read on today, they asked her " Why now, why at 60, are You doing this?" And our soul-sister said" Why Not and what better time to do it?" A lady after our own 💞! But best wishes for for your continual success, give those kiddos a hug for me, my youngest child, my Tomkitten just turned 39, his nieces, my grandgirls, Naomi will be 23 a week from today and the other one Amy- Cameron was 21 last October 24th. Used to call her Amy- Macaroon, cause every grandma think grandbabies are sweet enough to eat. Naomi was NAY- NAY partly for the rhyming but mostly because she was the most negative toddler that drew breath. Everything was NO, from would you like a drink of milk? to would you like a piece of Meemaw's fresh chocolate layer cake? NO NO NO!

You'll do just fine, 73 and 6 months out next week( on the 5th). Had strange twists and turns on my WL trek, but like the Gospel song:
Wouldn't take nothing for my Journey now
Gonna make it to Heaven somehow
Devil grabs a hold and tries to Turn ME. around.
What Satan and his Bad Blips forget is I'm on Team Jesus, a child of God, and he shall not prevail in a skirmish between God and Him!

I’m 58 had gastric sleeve 8/31/18. My highest weight was 212 and was190 on surgery day. I reached my goal of 145 in 5 months and after8 months I am currently at 135. I’m still having a lot of trouble with nausea and have trouble getting in Protein as well. It is a real battle to make myself eat and my weight keeps dropping. I am concerned that I’ve lost too much. Not sure what to do to change it. Any suggestions?

Maybe add in some healthy fats like avocado and or nuts. How tall are you? Some folks think they've lost too much weight, but are in the healthy BMI range. Congratulations on reaching your goal so quickly, and I hope you can find some balance.

Anyone here have issues with ability to exercise? My right knee is bone on bone (and trust me I’m not ready for another surgery anytime soon!) and walking is difficult and painful. I had hoped dropping the almost 30 pounds would help and it did marginally but I’m kind of sad and discouraged by this. I want to go and do so much. ☹️

I have arthritis in my knees so I also have some problem getting around (not nearly as bad as you!). My physical trainer suggested doing exercises in a pool in you have access to one.

@Ineedsthebeach, great minds think alike, I was just going to suggest the exact same thing for our friend. So much easier doing exercise with the water's buoyancy as a helper! Trust you're having a lovely day and a beautiful evening!💕😝💕

Hand in there! 30 pounds didn't cut it much for me, either. I am now down 65 lb from date of surgery and am finally coming alive!! 🙂 Be patient with yourself. You will get there!

I'm having my bypass at 58 but I feel great since losing my weight from the sleeve. I can afford to lose a few more pounds with the bypass.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
