Well, the past couple of weeks have been most eventful. I've had my sleep study; gotten the results (moderate obstructive sleep apnea - picked up my CPAP this afternoon); completed all my bloodwork, and... RECEIVED APPROVAL FROM MY INSURANCE COMPANY! My pre-op is scheduled for next Thursday, 1/10. The earliest I can have surgery is Friday, 1/18 (if he has openings). If not, it will be the following week.

OMGOMGOMG! I cannot believe its happened this quickly. My first informational session was on 11/14, and from that day on, it's been non-stop appointments. My Bariatric Coordinator is simply an angel. She's worked so hard, and kept me informed every step of the way. I'm a wee bit scared now, but there's more excitement than fear.

I'm going to call them tomorrow to set my date. I don't see any point in postponing it. My dad is ill, and I want to get this done so I can be around and healthy enough to take care of him for however much longer we have him.

Congrats. You have been on a whirlwind of activity haven't you. Hope you can get the surgery date you need. Prayers for you and for your Dad. Good luck with getting used to the C Pap, if you keep using it you will come to love it. I don't lay down on the bed even to rest my eyes without putting mine on. I have been using one for about 14 years. Again congrats and wishing you the very best.

Thank you so much, everyone! I hope to get my date by tomorrow afternoon. I'm trying to now get my surgery done as soon as they can get me in. No point in putting it off. I spent the weekend cleaning my apartment, including cleaning out my fridge and cupboards. I now have almost NO food - LOL! I went out shopping and bought just the basics I will need for the first couple of weeks (broth, crystal light, etc.) at pre-op on Thursday I will be picking up my Bariatric Advantage shake mix and Vitamins.

Had a bit of an emotional afternoon. My dad is very worried about the surgery, and just does not understand why I am doing it. I tried explaining the procedure, and he's worried because its not reversible. Why would I want to reverse weight loss? As I started verbalizing what it's like to be obese, and the role that has played in my life (or lack thereof), I started getting very emotional. I guess I've never verbalized it to anyone before. I also tried to explain that I know of the complications; however, if I let any of life's difficulties stop me from doing what I have to do (like I have most of my life), I wouldn't get anywhere and would continue being miserable. Only after I'd told him that my coworker whose had the surgery done by the same surgeon is at work, looking and feeling wonderful, did he calm down a bit.

I feel a bit selfish right now for causing him worry. He has enough things to worry about wi his wn health issues. But I feel if I don't do this now, I will never get the chance.

Thank you for listening to my vent. :-)

Wow that's great. You were not required to do the 3-6 month weight management program? I hope mine goes as fast.

Why don't you take dad to a support group meeting this may help ease his mind or to a seminar even though you already went to one

Well, I got my date: Friday, January 18, 2013 at 1:00 PM!!! :D

Laverne1908 - Nope, all I have to do is a shake thing (2 shakes and a "sensible meal) beginning one week prior to surgery. I'm sure they'll try to make me purchase the Bariatric Advantage ones. They're supposed to last me for the pre-op week, plus one week post-op (at 3 shakes a day).

kisersassy - My dad has lung cancer, and can barely get up and around anymore. My sister and I have to run all his errands and transport him to/from all of his appointments. My dad is the type who will fret over the smallest things. He also doesn't like change of any kind, so he just doesn't understand. It's okay. I have enough support around me to get me through this. My biggest hurdle was telling my lunch buddy, who eats nothing but crap. I was sure she was going to give me a hard time, but I just told her this morning, and she seems to be fine with it. I told her "Don't give me any grief when I can't eat the same stuff you do!" LOL!

Congrats! Your dad sounds like mine, but my daddy feels there is nothing wrong with me. I get it, they love us no matter what and can't understand why someone would "choose" to have surgery if they didn't have too. I tell my dad after things are already done so he doesn't freak out. LOL

Best wishes!! :)

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
