in dire need of a soda!

Google is not the place to go for a question as serious as this. Call your physician. Every medical doctor I've seen and every book I've read on the subject says any carbonation is dangerous to the integrity of your pouch. As time passes, you will either be gradually stretching it out by breaking the rules on occasion, or maintaining its size by following the rules. If your surgeon says its ok, then ask him or her in what quantities and frequency. Don't leave it to a stranger on a forum like me or a random Google search result to give you the right answer. All I can tell you is what I've learned from books and doctors and my bariatric support group.

No soda' date=' or any carbonated beverages at all, ever. The gas stretches your pouch.

Same with using straws and chewing gum - you swallow air in both cases, which expands your pouch.

No gum will be the hardest for me, but it's worth it :)[/quote']

I did some research on the gum chewing, since I love my gum...it kept coming up over and over that it can put air in your pouch but not stretch it. The problem is if you swallow the gum. There's a problem there. I can deal with burps/toots just so i can have my gum. As long as there's nothing else in my stomach I haven't had any problems with gum.

I've got to ask my doc about that because I would be sooooo happy if I could keep chewing SF gum :)

Straws can allow air for some people. If it was causing gas, you'd know. I use a straw, always. I'm a lady. I don't have issues with gas. I also chew gum when I run. sugar free, of course.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
