Taking A Compliment..

Recommended Posts

I had surgery Oct 12th, I am down a total of 48 lbs (including my peril diet) which I am excited about. I went from and 18/20 to a 14 pants size. My problem is..I do not know how to take a compliment. I went to the dentist for my regular cleaning and was shocked that they all knew I had the surgery. (I have only told a few people) I work for an orthodontic office so I believe that someone from my office shared the news. I am not ashamed of me having the surgery, but when I walked in all of the girls came out to "check me out" .. it was like I had a new baby. lol! I was so uncomfortable! I would have loved to just run out.

Last night I went to a wrestling meet and people there gave lots of compliments.. I.was able to say thanks and walk away. I have a fear of them asking lots of questions that I just don't want to answer.

Does anyone else feel like this??

I do at times but then after a while you get use to the compliments and learn to say "thanks" and really mean it. I only told my immediate close co-workers about my surgery and asked that they do not tell anyone, in my job they would be breaching confidentiality if they told someone. I also only told a few close family members and friends. If someone says "wow you lost weight, you look great" how are you doing it I say "THANKS and I am dieting and exercising. Which is the truth, I am dieting and exercising like hell to boot !!! My medical history is no one's business unless I make it their business. Sounds like you are doing fantastic... keep up the good work and enjoy those complements :)

I can understand your feelings. It is such a personal choice-only selected family is aware of my pending RNY. I would have mixed feelings about people knowing my business when it wasn't intended to be (their business) . Compliments to me is like receiving a present. ^_^ I am better at giving the presents Congratulations on your achievements so far. ~ LInda

Yes.... I feel like some people are envious... They were happiest when I was the fat girl in the bunch...now that I'm closer to their size they feel threatened,,,,as far as the compliments. It's almost insulting. Because I realize that all this time. People saw me as a fat pig.... Now all the sudden I'm worthy of Praise.... It makes me sick.....

I went ahead and just posted it on Facebook and everyone in my life knows. I didn't want people whispering behind my back, I d rather them ask me to my face. Every time I see someone that I haven't seen in a while all they want to talk about for 30 mins is the surgery, my diet, the pain involved. For the most part they are just curious and once they realize everything that goes into it, the compliments turn from wow you lost weight to wow I could never do that. Then they know and the topic is dropped. As for strangers, just say thanks. The worst thing you can say is no I m not because you are calling them a liar. You are now fabulous, adjust, lol. Good luck.

I had a really hard time in the beginning. If anyone asked I alway got nervous. It's been a year for me now and I can honestly say I can take a compliment now. It takes time but you will get there. It's ok to be happy and enjoy your success. You have worked hard and deserve the compliments. Enjoy and be happy:-)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
