What is PBing?

Recommended Posts

There is a list somewhere, don't know where off-hand.

PB = Productive Burp. It's generally accepted as the term for when something becomes lodged in the stoma and cannot pass, and has to be expelled from the esophagus. In other words, you yak it up. "Burp" is a very mild analogy. :)

Don't be fooled, it is exactly like vomitting.
I have to disagree.

It's very different from vomitting. "Vomitting", by definition, is when the contents of the stomach are forcefully expelled through the mouth. So you're producing things like stomach acid, bile, undigested food left in the stomach, etc..

When you "PB", you are expelling something that's in the esophagus, stuck in the stoma, or the saliva & whatever else you've added on top of something that has become stuck. You do not expel the contents of your stomach, you do not expel stomach acid. Whatever has made it to the stomach stays there.

From a previous thread:

Vomiting is when the contents of the stomach are purged through the mouth. The contents of the stomach include things like stomach acid, and anything that is yet undigested.

PBing (granted definitions vary, but in general it's the same principle) is when something cannot pass throught he stoma and has to be ejected, generally through esophageal spasms, through the mouth. The contents of the stomach are not involved. It's usually just whatever got stuck and whatever you've swallowed since. Sometimes when you PB whatever was stuck is pushed through and you only bring up some nice frothy and perhaps discolored saliva.

Totally different things. But when you use them synonymously, you're in the position of giving someone some really bad advice, or really misleading people about the symptoms you're experiencing.

There are some things in common, like it comes out your mouth, and you might make a wretching sound or have heaving, and both can be preceded by discomfort and excessive salivation... but TOTALLY different in what's happening physiologically.

E.g. frequent vomitters will have problems with erosion of the enamel on their teeth, because the ACID erodes it over time. Frequent PBing would never lead to enamel loss due to acid erosion.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
