Amount for Dietitian Visits??

I have my 1st consultation w/the surgeon tomorrow. (It's my 1st appt. period). Aetna Open Access HMO (for Federal Employees), just told me that they will not pay for a dietetian unless you are diabetic.

I was going to cancel my appointment, then I decided I'm going to go ahead and talk with this doc to see where I stand. If this visits sounds promising and he thinks I'm a candidate, etc. Perhaps I'll just look into self-pay for the dietitian.

Anyone have any estimates they made have paid monthly to see a Dietitian?

$20 out of pocket each time I see the dietician here. My insurance does not pay unless it is diabetes related. Fortunately hubby's insurance will pick up the cost. Otherwise it would be $20 each time I see her.

I consider my BC/BS of Michigan plan to be excellent insurance.

They do not, however, pay to see a nutritionist, they consider it "educational." It was mandatory for me to see a nutritionist as one of my pre-op appointments. She charged $120.00 and I was there 45 minutes. OUCH!

She said I should see her again 4-6 months post-op.

My 'nutritonal counseling', such as it was, was included in the costof my psych eval, done in the same office, same day. But it was a clinic that specialized in counseling for health issues (food, smoking, addictions, etc).

The week before my surgery when I went in for last consultation with surgeon, the nurse did a group presentation regarding nutrition, etc. and it was included in the surgeon's office call fee. I didn't realize it at the time, but that must be their way of getting some info to patients even tho the ins. does not pay for it as a separate service.

Mine was $160.00 and I used my Flex Spending Account to pay for it.
