The Big Apple May Ban Big Soft Drinks

Recommended Posts

New York mayor Michael Bloomberg has proposed a ban on the sale of sugary soft drinks over 16oz. The policy would "limit sugary drinks to 16 ounces or less at restaurants, mobile food carts, delis and concessions at movie theaters, stadiums and arenas. However, grocery or convenience stores are excluded from the proposed policy. Violation of the regulation would result in a fine of $200 each time it is transgressed."

The proposal has created something of a broo-hah-hah with opponents saying that it would be a violation of civil and constitutional rights.

What do you guys think? Good idea or infringement on personal freedom and choice?

I live in NYC and I think it's a good idea. Before my surgery I'd always get the larger size not because I really wanted a huge amount of Coke but because it was always cheaper to get the next size up (sometimes .25 sometimes .50, but always cheaper). And by the time i was holding this huge drink i decide I'm not going to waste it so I end up drinking it and therefore consuming way more calories than I intended.

If the ban goes through, then people will be limited in the amount they're able to buy so they will probably just consume a smaller portion rather than paying again for another cup.

Something like that would have been useful to me years ago...but hey, better late than never.

Yeah that's a tough one because it's like when do you as the govt. step in. I think it is a good try, I don't think it will really solve anything in the big picture though. Seems like businesses will figure out a way to get around it. But who knows. And on another note, what the hell is it about soda that is so damn GOOD! Haha it's funny cause flat soda is hella nasty! I guess it's the carbonation, but why? So weird.

Have you ever got a large soda to split with your kid because it will save a dollar or two? I have.

Granted, we shouldn't have bought a soda, but something healthier. I think this is a slippery slope. I'd rather see the government work on getting soda out of schools if they feel they must intervene.

But 16oz (the max amount allowed) is still pretty big, big enough to share. And out here we've already banned sodas from schools. The problem now seems to be the kids buying soda from the store before hand and taking it in.

Sure soda isn't the only reason why we become obese. But I think it's a start...

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
