just curious as to how many of you have had complications since surgery and what kind of complication did you have. my surgery is Aug 3. not trying to be negative but sometimes things happen. maybe you could share how u knew something was wrong and it could give us some ideas of what to watch for..

Hi joe,

I had kidney infection, dehydration and low potassium. But, to be fair I was pretty sickly before surgery and knew the healing process would be tough.

I've never had a problem and my surgery was April 11th. I did a lot of research and followed my surgeons instructions. The first fee days are hard to get all the fluids in but I walked around with a Water bottle for the first week to remind me to keep sipping.

I got pneumonia and had to be hospitalized pretty much my whole first month. I had to have a chest tube put in my lung thru my rib cage to drain my lung cuz one was 100% filled :( then i was sent home with a pic line IV. (an iv they put in ur shoulder and it goes to ur heart). that was for antibiotics and i had that for 2 weeks. It was really tough. My surgery was april 6th, and i had my pic line taken out the first week of may. I was feeling myself again by the 3rd week of may. I deff dont regret it though! ive had amazing results!

The stress from the surgery caused me to go in to ketoacidosis. My blood sugars were extremely high. Trouble breathing and high heart rate. I was moved to the step down ICU. Don't remember anything for the first 24 hours. Other than that....things are getting better! Best of luck to you!!

I was at a support group recently and since i have a date they let me sit with the post op people so i could get some idea of how it would be. there were many people so we devided into groups of five or six and they asked how many people had complications and like 4 of the 6 at my table had. and one lady kind of laughed and said i got the lucky table.lol she asked if it had given me seconds thoughts. while it is a little scary so is the thought of losing my legs to the diabetes that I've had for 10 years or having a heart attack because of the high blood pressure and cholesterol. these are my "complications" from being fat but it didn't stop me from having fast food..lol

I had horrid pain issues. I was down for 5 weeks with massive pain. I felt crazy cause 90% of the people said they had no pain. Medication really didn't help either

Ohhh this thread makes me feel less crazy!! How is everyone doing now that had complications? I'm 7 weeks and have no pain but still struggle to get food and Water intake.

law,

You warned me to go get checked cause of all your pain being more than just pain. I actually went to the ER on your suggestion cause this RN refused to listen to her own body. Fortunately, CT and X-rays later mine was "just pain." I know I'm not the only one who had pain but I did feel "alone and crazy" when almost everyone was saying "I didn't even need pain meds. I was only a little sore." blah, blah, blah;)

My mother in law's friend had it and then her daughter in law had it. The doc cut into an artery by accident and she ended up in the ICU for a week. That could happen in any surgery though. Looks like a nice malpractice suit though.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
