Protien Shake Question

Recommended Posts

So when considering what protien powder to buy. Is there a typical physician recommend brand? I have a dd with a rare metabolic condition called glycogen storage disease (GSD). Her specialist only allows her to drink "medical protien" bc he says the kind sold at GNC, or general stores contain steriods which would not be good for her. Its like $25 for 17 scoops and it takes two scoops per drink. Its expensive, but I'm not going to do anything to risk her health.

So my question is, do your drs typically tell you to avoid these protien powders or can you have them?

ok so here's the scoop hehehehe on Protein. It is universal that most dr's want you to have whey Protein isolates and concentrate. You have to be really carefull about the ingredients on what your puttin down there. Low carb < 5 grams is typically preferred and generally not sugar. sucralose, most people can tolerate. Read the labels carefully though because the main ingrediant needs to be whey protein isolates. Watch your caloric intact with these as well, i pick ones with < 150 calories per scoop. Also watch how much protein your getting. I get 24 grams per 28 gram scoop. With the skin milk i mix it with i get an additional 8 grams of protein per cup and i usually mix 2 cups so i get 40 grams per shake. This means that 2 a day yields 80 grams and thats great!

I use optimum's whey protein and i love the flavor and they have like 16 different kinds. Extreeme milk chocolate and strawberry are my fav's. Find one you like and make sure your drinking your required amount!!! Remember that protein causes the dump of glycogen stores from the liver so dont skimp out! My doc just about pooped when i told em i was taking in about 94 grams a day. He goes " WOW, thats great! I'm glad you found one you like! and your liver should be very well shrunk by surgery."

Mine is 54.00 for a 5 lb jug. This has about 71 scoops in it and i do 2 scoops a day. People have found cheaper ones so keep watching the thread. just stay away from the Proteins that are not WHEY PROTEIN ISOLATES as the main ingrediant

Thanks so much for such an informative posting! I will start looking at the labels. My dd uses Unjury protien. It is only available from the supplier.

Unjury is great stuff and ALLOT of people here use it! just be carefull with Walmart brands and off brands, they may say whey Protein but they might not have much isolate or concentrate. Just harder for your body to use the other stuff =)

I think Unjury is awesome. Has really been great for my daughter. Just a lil expensive when you add the shipping onto the costs. Don't mind spending it on her...lol

Ok so I remembered that I had bought protien powder for my son who is a football player. Its called whey-26 protien. I checked the label and the first ingredient is whey protien isolate. I scoop is 30g, with 26g of protien per scoop. There is no sugar and only 1g of Carbs per scoop. Its only 14 scoops per container but it was only $10.

I used this brand years ago before I ever gave RNY any thought when dieting and loved the flavor of it. I was also using this pre surgery for awhile, but then, when I compared the Bariatric fusion and Advantage brands found out the other nutrients and Vitamins were missing so stopped using this. I'm wondering though, now since I'm post surgery and taking all the Vitamins, if I could begin using this again. The calorie content of this is much lower then any of the other's I've been trying to use since surgery also. I can't stand the taste of any of the others since my surgery and know I'm not taking in enough Protein a day. It's also on sale right now on Vitacosts website. http://www.vitacost.com/optimum-nutrition-gold-standard-whey-double-rich-chocolate

I mix Boost Diabetic (found at drug stores and wal Mart I'm sure) and pack of Presidents Choice whey Protein for a total of 54 grams of Protein in 250ml. It tastes like a frothy pudding, yummy!

The carbohydrates are 16.5g in total but at this point I'm not entire sure how awful that is.

360Calories

1g sugar

I was mixing up a super high (45 gms) Protein Shake every morning, but yesterday my nutritionist told me that your body can't really use more than 30 gms at a time. I just did a little research and she appears to be correct.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
