It is normal to be scared. I'm scared too. This is a major surgery and life change. I'm new to the site too. I find it very helpful. I've heard a lot of positives about the bypass compared to banding. It took me 2 years to decide to have the surgery. My weight is only making my medical issues worse. I've tried every diet possible and after researching about bypass surgery I decided this is the right decision. I wish you luck on your journey. We can do it.

My surgery is May 1, and I am scared too. This is the second gastric surgery for me so they are going to open me up. I have all kinds of health issues, and my Dr. Said it would save my life. I have family I love and want to see grow up, so it will be worth it. This site is great, and so supportive. I'm glad you joined the groups,

I have my first appointment with the nutrienist tomorrow. My question is, I am just on the border of meeting the weight requirement. When I go on this diet plan, that my insurance requires, how do I not lose weight. I'm afraid I won't qualify anymore if I lose weight. What did you all do?

Hey folks....I'm nervous too but, I would think if we weren't at least a little nervous that THAT would be something to be nervous about :) It's a big step, a big surgery and nothing to laugh about for sure but, if we keep gaining we'll have many more things to be nervous about. So good for you for being nervous. Do your studying, your research and become full of the knowledge you need to help yourself after surgery to the best of your ability. We can all help each other here too :)

I had the lapband and had problems with it. The port didn't bother me at all, the needles to fill the band actually didn't hurt at all but, the band being too tight or too loose didn't help and then the slip was terrible. I'm looking forward to no having to have fills with this. It's a big step and it took a long time for me to stop thinking of it as cutting up my guts but, to think of it as a life saving re-routing :) The tool that will help me stay on plan and get healthy. That's right...we CAN do this!

Most insurance companies consider your starting weight when you apply your "official" weight when it comes to paying for surgery. I had to actually gain a few pounds to qualify.... I carried ankle weights in my pocket when I went for my first couple weigh ins) Of course, after I was accepted and in the 10 months I had to wait for my surgery I gained 50 pounds!!!! (I had just had my band removed when I first applied, I was loving that normal, for me <way too much> eating)

I'm guessing your company will use your starting weight and not deny you if you lose before the surgery.

It truly is a life changing surgery. Everyone has some level of anxiety about it. If you are really ready to do this (and only you know that) You just kind of have to accept that this is the best thing for you and that you will do fine.

Just remember we are here for you if you need to talk. We have all been through it, or are going through, the same things as you now.

I think they use your starting weight or highest weight. I too am just barely make the weight limit. It took me awhile to figure out why my doctor kept asking me what was my highest weight (to qualify). I initially went in to have the sleeve, but since I have pretty serious reflux, dr.s suggested RNY. I may have my gallbladder removed at the same time. If you are really worried about not qualifying, you might want to wear ankle weights when they weigh you. ;-) Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
