What about salad?

Recommended Posts

I do miss the carbs but I would really love a nice big salad with lots of veggies, Beans, etc. How long before you could have lettuce and raw veggies?

Do you find that others who are trying to be helpful think that you can eat salads?

I was eating them by week 3 but nothing like broccoli that was to fibrous for me then and I still haven't eaten it raw yet. I enjoy salad a lot and spent a lot of time at Panera or Subway getting the chopped salad. :)

I eat a homemade spinach salad with grilled salmon or chicken every day and I probably started doing that around 8 weeks. I love salads and while I don't buy pre-made or restaurant ones I have them all the time. It's amazing how you can Protein them up with goat cheese, meat, Beans and make them interesting with salsa, avocado/guacamole, seeds/nuts...

These are generally not huge salads. Can't get down too much. I just have a hard time sitting down to a plate of lone Protein.< /p>

We're at 7 weeks now. I haven't yet tried a salad but plan to inch up into it by trying one raw veg at a time. We have been eating small amounts of cooked veggies from the beginning but the only raw one we've tried so far is cucumbers which created no issues. I think before I dive into my much-missed salad, I will probably have us try each of the veggies separately.

Give them a small nibble, chew chew chew, and wait for a reaction.

My first salad, I ate a lot of lettuce. It freaked me out, but veggies chewed up really well take up less space than other foods.

I had to wait 8 weeks before eating raw fruits and veggies. I think I was maybe 4 days early when I ordered my fav, an Avo-Cobbo salad at Red Robin. It was so yummy. Just as I remembered it. I ate maybe 6 bites and took home almost all the salad. Hubby and I nibbled on that salad for the next 2 days and I was sick of it so I ended up throwing it out. It has on it: Luttuce, Tomato, bacon, avocado, olives, grilled chicken and blue chs chunks. I always get my dressing on the side so as to not get the leftovers soggy with dressing.

Let me tell you, salad was the hardest thing for me to wait for. I'm now 11 weeks post op and enjoying everything again (with the exception of ice cream - causes major stomach cramping). I eat salad (at home I make it with a variety of lettuce, tomato, mushrooms, cucumbers, red bell peppers and sometimes sharp cheddar cheese. I like Bobs Blue cheese or honey mustard dressing.

Wow! This is really great news. I thought I would have to wait 6 months at least! Yeah! Thanks all!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
