What are people doing to keep Constipation at bay?

I was in the ER all day yesterday due to a blockage....(I don't recommend it----it's ugly and so is the procedure to get rid of it)....they fixed me, and all is almost good......but I can't help be concerned about recurrences......I drink 40-60 oz and include 1 or 2 premier Protein drinks a day....and being made of whey, which is from dairy, I'm wondering if that's constipating? The ER docs said to stay away from dairy......I'm still only able to eat 2oz at a time....3oz if it's very moist.....so I have depended on those drinks.....

So, what are you doing to keep regular? Many thanks (sorry if this was TMI)

The only thing I find works for me is V8 low sodium high Fiber. 8-16 oz per day really helps me. Keep your Water (decaffeinated liquids) over 64 oz.- anything under that is not enough, and Protein Shakes don't count as liquids in this case. This is the fist time in my life that I am contending with this problem and I don't like it at all! Good luck to you! :)

My doc says don't go more than 3 days w/o a BM. After a few dreadful times of impaction, I decided to start taking Colace - a stool softener- daily (1 or 2 depending on what I'm eating). If it's already day 3, I take a laxative (usually Milk of Mag). But the Colace has seemed to be helping avoid that so far!! (But I just started this regimen last week).

I was taking a stool softener and it helped a little but the high fiber V8 works even better for me.

I lot of people use Miralax as well. You honestly can't taste it in your Water at all. Since you drink a lot of water this might me easy for you. I have used the Colace 2 in the morning every day seems to be the trick for me.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
