Anyone starting out around 225lbs?

Recommended Posts

I am 34 yrs old and 5'0 and 225 lbs . My surgery date is Oct 1st and I am soooo nervous. My fear is being too skinny. ( Crazy right?) Before I had children, I was 103 lbs. Looking back that was too skinny. I looked horriable. So my question is has anyone else started out around 225lbs and how much did you lose?

Hello! I'm 30 something and 5'2". I started out at 215 (the heaviest I've ever been). My surgeon told me that I'd lose about 40 #'s in 2 months. But I hit every stall like you would a stop light. Here's a tip, please do not allow yourself to get constipated! That and heartburn have been my only issues throughout this entire process. So I probably would've hit that goal of 40 #'s sooner if it hadn't been for that. Good luck!

I'm 28 and 5'2 and my starting weight was 206. I am 8 months post op. I'm at 137 now, and trust me losing too much isn't going to be an issue!! You will be able to eat much more as time goes on.

Hi guys. I was just approved by my insurance to have the sleeve done. I’m 5’1 225. My goal weight is 155🙏🏼 I have to start my meetings with the psychiatrist & nutritionist. Having my colonoscopy next week. I can’t wait to have this done. Took forever to finally qualify! Any advice for me??

I weighed 220 on the day of my surgery and am an inch shorter than you, so yes.

I have struggled with feeling like I've ended up "too thin", but it's been due to a combination of complications from the surgery itself and some unrelated medical issues as well. My goal weight was 110, I was happy at 105, and ended up at a low of 91 when I was at my sickest a few months ago (a few pounds underweight for someone my height).

Most people start to feel their restriction loosen at around the year-two year mark. I'm 22 months out and have only just started to feel like I can eat a bit more, and I'm simultaneously relieved and afraid because now it's up to me and my self-discipline to maintain.

I am 54 years old and 5'1''. My starting weight was 230. I'm currently at 175.9. My surgery was 4 months ago. My goal weight is listed as 140 because that is what my nutritionist said i would likely get to. i would like to get down to 120-130 but i am being realistic and setting the goal for 140 and then we will see what happens!

i'm almost 5 yrs post op, but at the time of my surgery I was 5'2", 46 yrs old and 235 lbs.

got to goal (127 lbs) around 7 months post op and somehow managed to stay below goal ever since (weighed 120 lbs this morning)

i was one of the lucky/unlucky ones (depends who you ask) that had vice-like restriction the first 9-10 months. it loosened up more and more over the years, but not to the level of "normal" eaters...i still don't seem to eat us much as those around me. I hit my max volume for a sitting at about the equivalent of 1 cup of solid food. more if its salad, less if its dense Protein or fluffy bread. you didn't ask, but I'll put this here anyway: i can drink as much liquids at whatever speed, so long as i have no food in my stomach....but once there is food in there, I need to wait AT LEAST 1/2 an hour to digest a bit before I drink, otherwise i'll barf.

Ms.sss you are my inspiration! I am 5'1'', 54 years old, and started at 230lbs. I had VSG on 4/12/2023. My current weight is 172.4. I agree with you on the eating, similar experiences with those foods as well. I hope i have as much success as you did at losing weight!

well, if we compare (and we KNOW we aren't supposed to), given our sorta similar starting stats, you are actually more or less at the same place i was at 4 months post op so its totally doable :)

good luck! ❤️

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
