Anyone Else Not Have To Do a Pre-op Diet?

Recommended Posts

No diet for me required. Doc said only for BMI 50 and above. I am doing one meal a day and the rest liquids just to make sure. So ready for my Sept. 16 day of surgery. Good luck to everyone.

I dont have to do a liquid pre op either

As it was explained to me, the two week pre-op diet is there to shrink the size of your liver, which because of its location, can make the procedure more difficult. The liver lies on top of your stomach so it needs to be lifted and moved out of the way. They say that in some cases, the operation has to be aborted if they see that the liver is not in the right condition for the procedure. Clear Liquids the two days before are just so your stomach is completely empty before surgery. I'm surprised to hear the difference of opinion on this! You would think these things are non negotiable.

I had a 12 day liquid pr-op diet and it had many good benefits. It allowed me time

to slow down my mind and mentally prepare for this unreversable purcedure.

With the livers quality improving was a safer surgery. If the simple requirements of

this prep is so horrible how will you feel when you have no choice. I think you willingly

accepting this immediately give you power to start your journey inpowered.

I did it and now 11 days post op and down 30 pounds.

My BMI was 47

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
