Anyone had a port infection and were able to keep your port?

Recommended Posts

I was banded on August 24th and had to have port removed on October 10th. New port in on December 21st. Total weight loss so far :clap2: 45 lbs!

Hang in there it is worth it. Keep your eye on the prize! :P

Hi,

I haven't posted in a while. How did you know your port was infected? Did you have pain? swelling?

My port has flipped and it causes me pain after I eat. It needs to be corrected.

Hi! New to board so just reading for first time. I have had a total of 3 infections at the port site. First two took antibiotics(cephalexin) and went away for a while, then finally about a month ago my tubing started protruding through skin (yes, could actually see white tube on outside!!) and went back to TJ to have fixed. They cleaned up and moved the port to the left. Now I am having severe burning and pain at the port site, but am hopeful that this is healing process. I am happy with the band overall, so I am dealing. Hope you are feeling better! Just watch for symptoms to reoccur, and be careful.

Anyone with a port infection should probably get checked for erosion since it has been noted that people with erosion frequently had port infections (although I am not sure if the reverse is true).

Here is a quote I found from Dr. Ortiz on this forum:

Erosions can coexist with an infection process. Even though it would seem that the infection can start at the port and then ultimately cause an erosion, our recent studies have detected mircopenetrations of the stomach at the initial stages of the erosion (soon to be published data) then most likely stomach bacteria tract down though the tubing to the port and contaminate it. Again these ongoing studies will shed new light on the process and hopefully someday will totally eliminate the risk of gastric penetration.

I have an infection and have been told I would need it removed. Anyone have any stories to share?

Thanks!

So sorry you have an infection! I was banded Nov 16th and two weeks later ended up in the hospital while I was on a business trip with staph infection and had to have my port removed. I have not had it put back in yet.

I spent one week in the hospital and then 6 weeks recovering. Make sure that if you have an infection that you do not have the port put back in right away.... get healthy first!!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
