Is 2 weeks reasonable?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I was supposed to be sleeved on July 31st, but my surgery was postponed (indefinitely) in order to clear up a problem with atrial fibrilation. I am hopeful to have the sleeve surgery in December, when I will have 2 weeks away from work. Is it reasonable to expect to be able to return to work after 2 weeks of recovery? I realize I may be fatigued and I will still be in the process of healing--just wanting to hear from people who have been there done that.

Thank you!

Amy

It is different for everyone. I was sleeved on the 17th of July and went back to work the 29th, so not quite two weeks.

I was sleeved on the 30th and took off two weeks but have decided to take off one more because my body still just gets real fatigued doing the simplest of things. I'm going to take this next week to get out and go for walks and be real active to try to prepare my body for work. It may Depend on what kind of work you do. Are you on your feet all day? I work two (part time) jobs as a dental assistant and a preschool teacher but they both keep active so by 6:00 on my first day back ill be ready for bed! I'd try two weeks and just see how your body is feeling, or see what your Doctor suggests.

I went back to work after 1 week, but it really depends on the type of work.

I'm planning 10 days (my surgery is on the Wednesday before Labor Day and I plan to be back at work on 9/9). I have a very flexible office, though, and can do a little work from home if I have too. I do have to travel about 4 weeks after surgery, and have been told that it should be no problem to fly.

As everyone has mentioned, it depends on you and your job. I was sleeved on a Monday, left the hospital Tuesday, was working from home Thursday, and was in the office on Friday.

I have a demanding Director-level job so it's difficult to be out of commission for longer than a couple days at a time. But it's a desk job so that's how it was possible for me.

I have not had my surgery yet. However, I will not be in a rush to return to work. My dr.said three weeks off work and I will take it. I work in the office and in the field. I am not trying to be superwoman!

My husband also had to delay his sleeve due to undiagnosed a-fib. He is well entrenched now, and rate is controlled so they went ahead and sleeved him on Friday. He did great. He's cardioverted once but it didn't stick. Hopefully after he looses weight and his heart does not have to work so hard the conversions will stick longer.

I'm just over two weeks (July 25) and I'm definitely seeing a day-by-day improvement. My doc told me to take 2 weeks before going back to work, but then I was laid off a week before surgery. I think I would have been able to go back as of tomorrow, and that's with a few minor setbacks (drug reactions, hives, dehydration, UTI). I'm sure it's doable, but really glad I have the extra time to take!

I am an LCSW (Social Worker) doing case management with homeless Vets for the VA. I took 2 weeks and was due back at work tomorrow however after 2+ hours with my kids and grandkids here today and just doing normal grandmother things and ended up feeling like I was going to faint, I've decided I need another week. Now I'm going to call my supervisor and tell them I'm gonna need another week and ask for and advance on leave time and pray I get it. But even if I don't get the advance and lose a week of pay at least I won't end up getting sick and stressing my body.

In other words - do what you need to do to take care of you. We did this to get healthy and going back to work too soon will just make you sick which will negate the reason you had surgery. :)

I was sleeved 7/19 and took two weeks off. It was perfect. My job is high stress and have to lift/move heavy things. The two weeks gave me enough time to get ready for it. But everyone is different. Listen to your body. It will let you know when it's ready.

I went back to work after 2 weeks, but was restricted to no lifting over 10 pounds for a month after surgery date. I felt fine to return back after 2 weeks.

I got 4 days off, worked one, then took the weekend off and am back tomorrow... I work 2 jobs and am taking one more week for the second job. (Sleeved 8/12). I work (job 1) at a local high school and can sit a lot.

My doctor recommends 6 weeks for physically demanding jobs.. X-ray tech we push and pull lots of patients all day. Anyways I took it and was glad my first day back on my feet I was fine but second and third days I was extremely fatigued by the end of the day I'm sure from less calories. I had plenty of sick time to use up.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
