Stall! How to overcome?

Recommended Posts

I have hit a stall! Yes, I'm grateful for the 25lbs I have lost in less than a month and in no way am I complaining, but could someone tell me how to break the stall and get the scale moving again?

I don't eat much still. I'm on liquids/puréed and most days consume less than 400 calories.

You didn't mention your surgery date, but it is pretty common for people to lose a pound a day post surgery for 2 - 3 weeks then to stall for a week or two. For me I stayed at that plateau until I was able to get in 75 grams of Protein, 60 oz of Water and about 850 calories a day. Give your stomach time to heal, focus on balancing those 3 items and getting a little bit of exercise in, and you will put the stall behind you in no time.

My Goodness I was just goning to post the EXACT same thing. My surgery was on the 24th and I too have lost 25 lbs and now am stalled. Good to see I am not the only one and GREAT to see the answer. I have started today to bring up my Proteins and am starting to walk too. Hopefully this will get it moving again!!

You don't do anything, and it's not a real stall!

Check out the slow loss thread in success stories or the post I just made in rants/raves last week. Then, take a deep breath, relax and just keep doing what you've been doing. Short breaks, pauses or readjustments are normal and if you want to get real, even stalls (3 weeks or more at the same weight, no movement) are a normal part of the process.

No need to mess with your diet or change anything. Just be patient and remember that it takes time to get to goal. If you stop and do the math, you're losing way more than ever before. And if you stop reacting emotionally to the sad news that the scale won't move every day (hate that!) you'll see that there's no way on earth you could NOT lose on 400 calories a day.

You'll be fine! Congrats on the new sleeve,

~Cheri

I have to agree with Clk, it is way to easy to get obsessed when the weight loss slows or stops and start messing with things and end up making it worse. I am 8 month out and down 142 lbs, I have had several short "stalls" but I just stuck to the my routine and the loss always starts back up. It is sometimes good to check your measurements also, sometimes when the scale isn't moving you are losing inches and may not even notice because your worried about that dam scale. Good Luck, enjoy the journey it's not always easy but if you follow the plan it just gets better as time goes by.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
