How much should I be "drinking" post op liquid stage

Recommended Posts

Right now I am doing 1 shake for Breakfast, broth for lunch, 1 shake in the afternoon, and broth for dinner.... Along with Water and juice.... I don't think I'm getting enough in.... Or am I?

I need some sample day like examples of what others are doing... Don't just say xxx amount of Protein... I want to know exactly so I do know if I'm off or not.... I am going to buy some powder tonight cause right now I'm just doing premade shakes and is that even enough Protein in one day? I'm taking all Vitamins too

Thanks. Add me too I'd like to be able to check back with progress or updates for great advice given.

Make sure the Protein shakes are at least 20/30 gm of Protein per serving and LOW in sugars. THEN you can easily figure out how many shakes to use. If your goal is 8o gm a day, and the serving is 20... then 4.

You ncan have as much broth as you can get in. Remember to get in a LOT of liquids... non-carbonated ones...

My minimum post-surgery (on full liquids) was 64 ounces of Fluid and 60 grams of Protein. If something has both protein and fluid (protein shakes, skim milk, etc.), it counts as both.

I didn't do breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I drank small amounts throughout the day. Typically I filled up a 32 oz. Bubba keg with Water and ice and sipped that throughout the day, and made up the other 32 ounces (or more) with a variety of Protein Shakes, broth, skim milk, V-8, light fruit juices, and G2.

Are you on Myfitnesspal or a similar site? If not, you should be -- you can track exactly how much fluid and protein you are getting every day and see if you are on track. You can also friend people there who have had VSG and check their daily diaries to see specifically what they are doing.

Wow from what I just read Im doing really bad with the post op clear liquid diet. I'm 3 days post op and have barely gotten any liquids, let alone Protein it. It took me 2 days to finish a ensure clear nutritional drink which only has 9g of protein. Only 3oz of broth today and I tried to make a Protein Shake with unsweetened almond milk and with each sip my intestines were in knots. What I don't understand is if my doc said clear liquid diet for a week how can I possibly have a shake which is clearly not clear liquid. Maybe if I make with Water that will be better, ill try that tomorrow. i know it's important to get in protein.

No pass/fail here. WORK at it... Your intestines in knots ain't no biggie, they are just readjusting. Do you have any PAIN??? Do you choke or vomit. If not, keep on a' drinking!

No pain just general soreness and no choke or vomit. I'll keep drinking then, thanks Arts137.

The 1st week for many is difficult to get the goal number of liquids and protein in. I know mine was deficient in both categories. I was told at that time to concentrate on liquids so you don't become dehydrated and not to worry about the protein as much. Just do what you can do:) It will get easier as the weeks go on!

There are plenty of clear protein shakes. Syntrax nectar, Isopure are a couple. You may want to consider some Protein Shots if you're having problems.

What did your doctor recommend?

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
