I had one! The surgeons assistant took it out the day after surgery right before I left the hospital. Don't worry about the drain...you won't even feel it...they place it during the surgery so when you wake up...tadaa! Instant plastic Grenade hanging from your abdomen. It didn't cause any pain or irritation it's just weird! I will say that when they finally took it out it felt so gross ( it wasn't painful) just really weird and gross feeling! You literally feel the tube traveling through your body. If that makes any sense.

Had a drain for a week. Wasn't a big deal at all.

But I agree that when they take it out it is such a strange feeling. Before you understand what's going on its out and you feel so much better!

I had one and it actually gave me a weird kind of comfort. I could look at that drain everyday and have some reassurance that I didn't have a leak or an infection. It is a little cumbersome but I went to work with mine and nobody even knew. Mine was taken out after a week and I didn't even know the doctor had done it. I was still holding my breath waiting for him to pull it out.

Yep, had 1 for 2 days. The nurse took it out on my day of discharge. The nurse safety pinned it to the inside of my gown to keep it from haning.

The above poster was right, it doesn't hurt when iot comes out. Just feels really weird. Kinda like when u swallow a strand of spagetti then pull it back up. Yes, I've done it!

I didn't have one and was told that my surgeon doesn't use one unless absolutely necessary. You should talk to your dr about whether he usually puts them in or not.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
