Help! Gall Bladder Polyp: Remove?

Recommended Posts

Today I did my consent for surgery with my surgeon. During my abdominal ultrasound they saw a small < 1 cm polyp on my gall bladder. So today he said he would like to remove it (the gall bladder) during the VSG procedure.

This is not a stone. My husband and mother are both freaked out by the idea of two procedures; I feel like if it would save me issues down the road why not? I definitely need to check to see how this will affect my insurance. I was approved by Aetna for the VSG only.

I would appreciate any thoughts? Thanks!!!

Btw surgery is on August 13th.

I don't know about how it would affect your insurance approval, but it's not terribly uncommon to have your gallbladder removed at the same time as the sleeve being done. I think some doctors also like to do it because it is a preemptive strike against gallbladder issues down the road, which is really common for WLS patients.

I already had my gallbladder out when I had my sleeve done, but a couple of people I know had their gallbladder out at the time of the sleeve surgery. It took them a little longer to recover and they described a little more pain that people who had the sleeve alone, but otherwise, they haven't had any issues.

Good luck!

The materials provided to me from my doctors office and the research I did showed it is rather common to remove the gallbladder.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
