I keep picking up these darn cigarettes. My surgery will not be scheduled until I am smoke free for 8 weeks.

I hear you, quitting is really hard. I'm using Chantix, maybe you could look into that? Also, the e cigs can be used with no nicotine, that might help when you just can't fight the cravings. Good luck, we'll get through this and be on our way to healthier, slimmer adventures! ;)

Hey kara, I quit using gum because to me helped with oral fixation. I also had coffee stir straws and would chew them. The most morbib thing I did while quitting was this. Every time I felt like smoking I would Invision my self sitting in chemo. I know its no its morbid but that's ultimately what it will turn into if you don't stop. I thought "do I want to suffer thru this craving which will over in 15 mins....or do I want to suffer trough chemo". Hope that helps and good luck to u.

For me, they'll know because they check blood levels the morning of surgery....

Any nicotine or it's metabolites = surgery cancelled

A blood test can detect nicotine. the test will detect traces of nicotine only after 24 to 72 hours. This is because nicotine is metabolized so quickly in the body. By the time the nicotine the surgery will be done and over with. My surgeon told me with any surgery, its best to stop 30 before the surgery... but you want to heal and that smoking can cause more problems than healing at a slow rate.

I agree with the other post regarding the e-cig, they do help with the cravings.

You know, when you get lung cancer you will lose weight really fast! My three-pack-a-day stepfather lost nearly 200 lbs in the 3 months from the time they discovered the lung cancer to the day he died. It was not a pretty death

Yes, nicotine leaves the blood rapidly. It's metabolite, cotinine, on the other hand is present in the blood for up to 90 days after quitting, depending on how long and how much the person smoked. My surgeon tests for both on the day of surgery.

My surgeon made it clear that there will be a blood test given before

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
