Need recommendations for best protein shakes

I had gastric sleeve surgery July 25 (Thursday). I came home from the hospital yesterday after a two-day stay, and today I had my first protein shake -- Pure Protein, vanilla, which I think is too sweet. Got it at Wal-Mart. Can anyone share their preferences for these shakes? I couldn't even finish the first one, it was THAT bad. How am I going to get 60 grams of protein in each day? It seems like it's going to be a struggle. Tips welcome!

  • Shellbell333, what is the texture like for the green apple and blueberry? I am very PRE-op, but like to plan ahead. I've only had choc/vanilla protein shakes. Are the fruity ones the same consistency?

I completely agree! I drink 2 a day just as Crystal3052 does. They can also be bought at costco but I think Sam's is the best price. I am on week 7 and they are the only ones I tolerate. I prefer the chocolate over the vanilla. Good luck to you!! :)

You can search for "protein shakes" and will get tons of discussions of this.

Bariatric Advantage meal replacement have a lot of different flavors. Also I love Isopure's, sold at GNC. You can also get them online cheaper at LUCKYVITAMIN.COM. Here in Charlotte, NC at GNC they're buy 3 get 1 free. I don't like all the flavors but I LOVE the green Apple and the blue Blueberry. Hopes this helps.

Shellbell333, what is the texture like for the green apple and blueberry? I am very PRE-op, but like to plan ahead. I've only had choc/vanilla protein shakes. Are the fruity ones the same consistency? Do you mix yours with ice? That might be the only way I could have a fruity protein shake - make it like a slurpee!

I am currently drinking synth 6 as a recovery shake, muscle milk lite as a breakfast shake and gold standard casein as a bed time shake (real food at other 4 "meals"). All can be found at Vitamin Shoppe. If you are picky about flavors, as I am, you might need to order them online. I like to have cake batter, cookies / cream and double chocolate for muscle milk lite, synth 6 and gold standard, respectively. Note my tastes are more towards sweet, but I love them every day. You can usually find less sweet or fruit flavors by looking in one of the health stores ( vitamin shoppe is my preferred place) or at Amazon ( sells literally everything).

I like the lighter flavors and textures. My favorites are the Syntrax Nectar fuzzy navel, roadside lemonade, and lemon tea; the Isopure Peach Mango (cut 50/50 with water or citrus mango flavor G2 Natural; Unjury Chocolate Splendor (I mix mine with Hood Calorie Countdown nonfat and sometimes add in either some peppermint extract or some PB2 chocolate), and the Premier Protein chocolate.

If I'm in the mood for something thicker and sweeter, the Syntrax Matrix mint cookie flavor is my go-to.

I still like the Unjury products. It is pure hospital grade protein that tastes good. I use the vanilla with milk in the morning for breakfast or I just put it in a cup of decaf coffee. That really tastes good. I drink the Strawberry Sorbet for a snack and the Chocolate Spleandor in the morning for a change with a teaspoon of peanut butter. I also use the unflavored in my nutribullets but I want to make sure that I make them thin enough for my liquid diet. I put spinach, baby carrots, flax seed, walnuts and a half a banana with crushed ice and water. It tastes delicious I used to have that every day before my prep. I don't want to sound like a commercial but I do believe that you get the most bang for the buck with Unjury products.

I, too, like the Premier Protein chocolate and thanks to someone's suggestion on this website, I add instant decaf coffee and ice cubes in a shaker and wow, is it good. If you like a mocha tasting drink this is it :)

Good luck! These shakes got me through the first weeks after surgery and I still drink one a day to help get all of my protein in.

It's like kool aid. Or like drinking flavored Water.

The Isopures are like kool aid or like drinking flavored water. I guess you could mix it with ice but I haven't yet. It's not creamy at all. All the flavors are the same consistency. I don't like all the flavors but I like most of them. I like them to because they aren't creamy drinks.

The premier protein shakes that are sold at SAMs are very good. I believe each shake has 30g of protein. I've only tried vanilla and I really like the way it tastes
