Welcome to Fibromyalgia/Chronic Pain Sleevers

Welcome to the Fibromyalgia/chronic pain sleevers group

Fibromyalgia and other chronic pain conditions can prove a major barrier to weight management. Research has shown that fibromyalgia continues to be a common but largely undertreated problem in overweight and obese patients and can often pose a significant barrier to increasing physical activity.

So the questions I hope to see addressed in this group are:

  • For those of us who have not had the surgery yet, what are your expectations about “How VSG will affect your Fibromyalgia/chronic pain?”
  • For those of us who have not had the surgery yet, have you included you Fibro/pain management doctor as a part of your weight loss team?
  • For those with Fibromyalgia/chronic pain who have already had surgery, did you see an improvement in your pain or an increase?

Any experienced people with input would be so welcome. Let's share information and support each other since we all have special challenges with our conditions. Good luck and best wishes to all!

We can do this!

I am will have my surgery on August 01, 2013 at Little Company of Mary Hospital in the Chicago Metro area. I have Fibro, degenerative disc disease, bilateral carpal tunnel and bilateral plantar fasciitis, and Migraine headaches. I was on heavy duty medication and could not tolerate them. I am hoping to have a successful VSG!!!

I have had Fibro since 1992. I was a police officer and sustained a series of injuries on the job. I have been struggling with my weight ever since. Besides having a family history of obesity and obesity related death, the various meds used to treat my pain have resulted in my weight problems. Beside FM, I have sleep apnea, bilateral carpal tunnel and plantar fasciitis, degenerative disc disease, chronic fatigue, Migraines, high blood pressure and cholesterol

I think I am realistic about my upcoming surgery. Even though I have heard that weight loss reduces the symptoms of Fibromyalgia, I am undergoing surgery to improve my overall health and reduce my obesity related risks. If my Fibro gets better, that will be a wonderful benefit. If my Fibro gets worse, then that is anticipated possible side effect.

Mine has really been acting up since starting work as a nurse. I don't get enough sleep, and I'm on my feet a lot more. I know the extra weight is not good for my back, but I have been having cramping/pain from the back of my head to my heels. What is weird, is that it is all posterior, nothing on the front side of my body. I have had internal pains feeling equivalent to a horse having colic or a twisted gut.

I have noticed my hips hurting a lot lately. Last night, I finally figured out that I am having flare ups. I have fever with mine, so I end up feeling flu'ish. It really sucks. I also figure that since I started my liquid diet last week, I may be getting rid of some toxins, that is also causing the flares.

My Fibro symptoms initially reduced quite a bit after surgery, I think that might be because I started physical therapy immediately [about 1 month]. However, now that it is getting cold I am going into a flare. I always had problems with my hips and with each pound lost I do see gradual improvement.

Yes, as you get rid of toxins you will at first feel worse then things get better. Whenever you move back to food try to avoid wheat gluten and nightshades. I found as I began eating these categories of food, they caused flare ups.

Good luck

Thanks. I'm wanting to stay close to a Paleo plan. However, I do like onions.

I'm having enough trouble with Gluten Free/Nightshade free since my family is from New Orleans, I don't think I'm strong enough to go Paleo.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
