Feeling Physically drained everyday

Recommended Posts

I had surgery July 15th and everyday I have felt completely physically drained. There are days that I meet both the Protein and Water requirements and there are days I don't. It doesn't seem to matter if I meet the requirements I still feel drained. Will this improve over time or am I missing something? Any guidance or advise would be great.

You had major surgery. Thanks to the wonders of modern medicine you look fine, you feel pretty good, but your body is focused on healing.

It is driving me crazy too and have to be reminded too.

Its only been just over a week!

You just had major surgery. Give yourself a break. My first three weeks were spent going from the bed to the couch back to the bed. Week 3 I tried taking a 20 minute walk, and thought I was going to have to call a cab to take me 4 blocks home.

At week 4 I was finally feeling human again. I started walking and my energy started returning. Now I am in week 10, down 42 lbs, walking 3.5 miles 4 times a week -- and I have energy to spare!

It will get better. It will be amazing!

Do you sleep during the day? And have a hard time sleeping at night ?

I did sleep during the day when I was on the pain meds. I didn't like how I felt on those so I stopped taking them 3 days ago and I feel better in that aspect. But no I sleep fine at night, I wake up occasionally from stomach discomfort but I sleep good. I walk 2-3 times a day because I know I should be moving not just laying around. I just feel like I should be feeling better than I do at this point. I guess i'm not considering the surgery that big of a deal even though it sure feels like a big deal.

It will get better!! I am 6 weeks out and I still have days that I am more tired than others. Yesterday I was exhausted but today I went to the gym, Whole Foods and Publix. Came home and cooked dinner and cleaned it up. Tomorrow I am going to Disney and will walk and do what I can. If I need to sit down that is what I will do. Hang in there and make sure you get your Protein in! You just had major surgery and cut your calories drastically! It takes some time and you will get through it! :)

Thanks for writing this. I was starting to think I was different. Like i should be full pf energy and I'm just not. I'm tired every day and i don't last too long no matter what i try to do. I don't know whether or not all surgeons do the deep stitching thing from the large incision down into the left side muscle or not but mine does and that makes it much worse. That is more painful by the day. I can't wait until it finally pops loose.

I had surgery on July 11 & I'm still very tired ... I had my 2 week post op visit today & he said its normal we had major surgery and our bodies are still healing ... He said not to expect to be back to normal till about 4 -6 weeks from surgery so hopefully I got another 2 weeks and I'm good ... He said to make sure I'm getting my Protein Vitamins and fluids in !!! Good luck :)

Ok the reason I asked, I just had this same discussion at my surgeon's office yesterday. The nurse told me whatever you do, do not sleep during the day because you'll wake up at night and you'll feel crappy all the time and it'll take a while to break the cycle and feel better.

My partner who had surgery on 7/8 just regained energy today! So I can tell u, it gets better.

I am 5 weeks post-op and I feel really good but before surgery I could go all day long and not stop until my head hit the pillow. Today I went shopping with my mom and did a ton of walking and trying on clothes, etc. which would not have phased me before surgery but I feel like I have been beat with a stick. I am a teacher and school starts back in less than a month and I have got to get my stamina built back up.

It will definitely get better. Took me 4-5 weeks to start to feel normal again. Then it's been smooth sailing. 8 mons post op & I couldn't be feeling better. Hang in there.

It does take time. For me, I was tired for a few weeks but then it got better. Although till about 3 months, I would be fine and energetic most days but then seemed like once a week or so, I would just be wiped one day and not have energy. I would take it easy those days.

I know everyone is different but be patient and you will be back to a new and better you!

I'm 5 weeks post op and I still have days that I feel so tired. Still healing even at 5 weeks! We just had part of my stomachs removed. It will take time :)

I'm 22 days out and I have been miserable. Until today! I've turned a corner. At least I think I have. They say 4-8 weeks to get your energy back is normal. I went back to work the week after surgery, and I shouldn't have done that.

Hang in there! It gets better everyday.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
