How long til I can eat more than 4 oz?

Recommended Posts

I am only 3 weeks out and still on purée. I can't eat more than a couple tablespoons at a time. Just wondering how long it took everyone until they could eat a little more. I am trying to get the Protein in but it's hard when I can eat such tiny amounts.

I didn't have a puree phase but made sure I kept drinking my Protein drinks even to this day to make sure I was getting my Protein in.

My secondary surgeon said it should be possible to eat a cup at six months out, but as everything else, this varies by person. You should be able to eat more than a few tablespoons soon.

I am 9 weeks out and on some days I can eat 1/2 cup and some days I can eat a few tablespoons. It's weird. Good news? I really don't want more after the first bite or two physically, even if I want it mentally. It's uncomfortable when I eat too much so I just don't eat more.

I am 5 months out and it also varies for me. Somedays and something's I can eat 4oz of food, and sometimes I can't for the life of me.

I'm 5.5 months out. I can eat 6 oz of yogurt but 2-3 oz of solid food is pushing it.

At that stage I was still getting most of my Protein in drinks. 7 weeks out I still use 1 Protein Drink a day to make sure I get enough.

Not to hijack the thread but i don't understand. I'm only 6 days out and on Clear liquids. I can swallow and drink easily. My pills go down more easily than they did before.A full cup of liquid is nothing. If i feel full its just for a minute or two then the fullness goes away. Is a cup of solid food different than a cup of broth? I feel tempted once in a while when the fam is eating something i like but I don't feel hungry.

Yes, a cup of broth is different than real food that causes you to feel the restriction from tne surgery.

My surgeon has his patients on clears for ten days, then on full liquids for a week (or was it ten days?) and then FINALLY onto soft foods.

It's hard to do, but there's a reason my surgeon has no leaks after thousands of operations - I trusted him to slice and dice me, I ought to trust his post op recommends, too.

Liquids make for tough going - you won't feel fullness and you're not satisfying that desire to simply chew. It's tough to hang in there but do it, even if other folks have a surgeon that isn't as strict. Follow the guidelines you were given.

Trust me, in just a few weeks (or days?) you'll understand completely. I wasn't able to eat more than a single egg scrambled with a Tbs. of cheese until more than a year out.

It's individual, but my capacity remains small after three years - I can eat roughly 3 ounces of dense Protein or 8 ounces of food, total, if it's a combination of foods. On certain days or with certain foods I can fit as much as 1.5 cups. That's not a lot of food. I still have to choose eating OR drinking because I cannot do both and have room.

Cheri, thank you. My dr has me on clears for 3 weeks. I'm following it. I just got concerned because I haven't needed to sip since day 2. I easily drink a cup of Water, skim milk or P shake. There is no difference from before surgery on swallowing. I was getting concerned that if i can drink so much and so easily that when i get to solids i will be able to overdo. I hope for a tight restriction.

I'm sure we'll see you in short time venting about how incredibly frustrating it is that you can't get in all of your Protein due to your restriction. ;)

Hang in there, and congrats on your new sleeve!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
