I'm having my initial consultation on Thursday. I believe the Lap Band is the best option for me...so far.

My question for you all is:

Knowing the amount of weight and effort (exercise, diet modification etc) it took to get and keep the weight off do you think you could have done it without the band?

Plain and simple...HELL NO. :) I fought my weight for 20+ years...diet and exercise, WW, etc. The most I ever lost was 30 lbs in one year...and the next year, it was right back.

With the band, I've lost 82. I'm 1 lb. from my original goal. ;)

I second that with another hell no. I've tried every diet know to mankind and couldn't loose but with the band in 4 months I had lost 60 pounds.

Before surgery my main worry was that I was one of those people who for some reason was simply incapable of losing weight. I've tried so many diets and had such miserable results that I couldn't stay motivated. I've been banded almost 3 weeks, and did my own pre-op diet a couple of weeks prior to surgery- this is the most I've lost in this amount of time EVER. Usually, if I've even stuck to a "diet" for 5 whole weeks my weight loss would be closer to 5 pounds......My main focus is getting enough Protein, choosing healthier foods (no more enriched flour or high fructose corn Syrup in MY food choices) drinking more than 8 glasses of Water a day, and stopping eating a couple of hours before bedtime.

BTW- For me, the fact that I am now banded is a huge motivation in itself to keep with it. There is no better than feeling like you have hope to actually see results along with your hard work. That said, I may develop complications in the future- but I knew that going in- and I am working it as best I can in the mean time.

Good luck with your decision!

No way could I have done this without the band. I've tried for years and kept gaining it back. I know that this was the best option for me and for the first time in my life, I know I can do it!

I could not have done this without the band either. As soon as I hit that first plateu, I would have given up on any diet. And my last plateu lasted 8 weeks! Now I'm losing again, but NO WAY would I stick to a diet for 8 weeks without losing.

Triple, quadruple, quintuple HELL NO. I have lost weight before, but NEVER to this extent and never for this length of time. This feels permanent and for once I feel that I have the power to make it so. I've never felt anything like that before in my life.

No way, no how. I've lost a lot of weight before -- nearly 100 lbs once -- but this is different. When I "give up," I still slowly lose weight. When I work at it, I lose weight quickly. Before, when I worked at it, I lost weight slowly and when I "gave up" I gained like lightening.

The band is the best thing I've ever done for myself.

If that was the case I could have saved myself a hell of a lot of money....As far as I am concerned I tried it 27 years without the band with only failure to report.. I love my band and would do it again in a quick min...

No, I initially lost 30lbs but it took me forever. I've been banded 6 months and I'm down 35 lbs. I am losing at the rate of 1 lb per week.

That is excellent everybody. My situation is like this:

I have never given myself to losing weight but did lose 50 pounds with no effort, while being love sick. Of course I gained it plus another 50 pounds back. My concern is that the amount of weight I lose with the band could be accomplished by my dedicating myself to diet and exercise. With that said my other concern is...knowing myself...will I be able, on my own, to handle the portion sizes necessary to lose 120 pounds.

When it comes to the band...does it really help you manage your portion sizes? I know I sound conflicted...but this is where I am right now. Thanks for your patience.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
