Considering 5:2 fast diet

Awesome - kudos to TES to starting a group that can be a more informative start for people that might consider 5:2 down the road.

I don't want anyone to feel excluded. But I also don't want to spend a lot of time coaching someone who can barely eat 800 calories a day on a feast day and is frustrated by the slow and steady pace of this method.

And for me, that's emphasis on the SLOW and not quite so much on the steady!

I want to be clear, I wasn't accusing anyone of anything. My point was you are perfectly within your right to do whatever you like and create whatever group (public or private) you want. What I was pointing out was why people have the perception that they are being excluded.

Here's my 2 cents.... I was following the thread to see how it was working for the vets because I figure I'll be there someday. Then it was moved and I can't even see the thread because I'm on the iPad, so it seemed very exclusionary to me. I think that if the group had been created and the thread not been moved and instead been left to die a natural death like all threads do that don't get many posts, no one would have noticed. There's also not a lot of info on the iPad version about how the groups work and how to gain entry into a group. I understand the reason why it was done, but I think that a 1 year cutoff is arbitrary. Most of us are adults and can hopefully make our own decisions about what is right for us.

If you're not eating more than 1,200-1,300 calories a day already I don't see how intermittent fasting is going to benefit. The idea is the deficit built up over the two fasting days with a normal diet of 2,000 calories - with many of even the vets doing this, it's being done with a feast day limit that's much lower than that. What does that mean? If the 2,000 calorie feast days are part of a plan designed to shed 1-2 pounds a week, many of us get even less than that because most of the gals have trouble hitting even 1,300 calories a day. I'm three years out: my feast days are closer to 1,600 but I still have some where I just don't eat more than 1,200 myself.

There's a lot of info on the non-VST 5:2 boards about reducing your calories on the feast days if you aren't losing at a higher caloric intake on those days. Mathematically of course you are building a caloric deficit on the fast days but I'm not sure of the logic stating that if you eat lower than 1200 to 1300 calories on a feast day that 5:2 won't work for you. Eating to someone's BMR or TDEE works for some people, but others simply can't lose weight doing that and need to restrict calories to a greater degree. Like anything, the 5:2 plan is something that one needs to tweak to suit your individual metabolic makeup and lifestyle. Doing so is still within the parameters of the 5:2 plan.

I would imagine that being 5 months out you are not eating much more than 600 to 800 calories a day anyway?

Actually at 6 months out, my RD says that most people are eating between 800 and 1000 calories, sometimes more. Aren't you just a couple of months farther out than that, Laura? Were you at 600 calories six months out... that seems pretty low to me at this point?

Yes at six months I was eating a little over that.

And I got those numbers from one of your posts a couple of weeks ago when you said that's how much you consumed... Perhaps you are consuming more now?

And as far as the group goes Susan suggested that I be a moderator on it. So that's what I am doing.. No easy job I will tell you. But I like our group!

There have been days when I am intentionally closer to 600-700 calories due to my RD recommending mixing up higher and lower calorie and carb days (the Mosley principle but on a less formal basis), but I would say that the 800-950 calorie range is more typical at just short of 6 months out, especially when I have an intensive exercise day. The way you wrote your post, I thought you said someone at 6 months out would typically be eating 600 to 800 calories a day on a regular basis, and while there may be some that are, I believe that range is more typical for someone a couple of months post op. It sounds like you agree. BTW I don't think of the thread I started as "my" group or even my thread (the "group" is everyone who posts on VST)--it's something that's open to anyone who would like to participate. I just happened to start it bc there seemed to be a need for it.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
