How many times to eat a day

Recommended Posts

My doctor says I should eat 3x a day the whole meal should be the sixe of the palm of my hand and no snaking in between. I have a hard time following that and my nutritionist says if I can't follow the rules of the band I shouldn't have it. Pretty harsh I think. Anyway I am looking for new ways to eat throughout my day any ideas.............................

Thanks

My doctor and nutritionist said the same thing. I find that very hard to do but I keep trying. I do eat small meals throughout the day if it becomes too much for me to deal with.

If I am not at the right restriction level, 3 meals only is hard to do because I get hungry. However, with the right amount of restriction, 3 meals is very easy. If you can't do just 3 meals, maybe you need a slight fill.

If you haven't had a fill yet, then your nutritionist is not correct because you should be wide open. If you are wide open, there is no way anyone could possibly stick to 3 meals the size of ones palm.

P.S. cherg, I just saw your weight loss so far, how phenomenal! Your stomach shrinks as you lose weight too, so you may be loose because you have lost so much.

My original band surgeon said 3 times, no Snacks. My fill doc, who's been doing fills since before the band was FDA approved, says 6 small meals a day - no more than 4 oz. Go figure. Since this is for life, I tend to eat when I'm hungry. Sometimes I forget, sometimes I don't eat enough, sometimes I eat more than I should.:faint: I'm also nearly 4 yrs down the road, so as always, consult your personal physician.

Thanks faybie!! Well let me tell you I have a 4cc band and am 3cc filled. I also THINK I am hungry and most of the time if I try to eat to much I pb. Actually not a day goes by that I don't get sick. I may need a slight unfill, but I still need to get this eating thing down cause I think I am a compulsive eater and just eat to eat. You no with the band I never feel that full feeling like I did before you no that sickening full feeling that you use to hate well I am glad not to feel it but then again its hard for me to judge when to stop eating. If I wait till my chest hurts then I get sick. Catch 20 I guess. I am just looking for a good healthy eating pattern to get on cause right now I am not following anything and I need that structure in my life.

The only way I know I am full is the minor pressure in the middle of my chest. I sure hope that doesn't mean I eat too much. I am so scared to death of stretching my pouch.

Thanks for the kudos! I am having a good day for sure. The pants I bought 2 weeks ago are already falling off. I can't wait to get to a size that I actually have clothes so I don't have to go buy any. I am not sure how I managed to completely skip 2 sizes on my way up, unless I just squeezed myself into clothes that didn't fit.

My doctor said to eat four "meals" of 15 grams of mushy Protein (scrambled eggs, tuna, cottage cheese, etc.) first. If that goes down well, I can have something else with each meal, such as mashed veggies or fruits. Carbs like mashed potatoes are last if I have room left. Sugars have to stay below 8 grams per day and the foods I choose to eat have to be low fat. I can't drink liquids 30 minutes before eating or until 2 hours after eating to avoid flushing the food down before I feel full.

I haven't had any problems with hunger at all since I was banded. My liquid diet required 90 grams of Protein per day and I did not get hungry in between. I truly believe that the protein intake is the key!

If a nutrionist is not understanding, then not a good one. eating four to 6 small meals a day keeps your metabolism up, especially with the low calories we get with the band. Ideally you want 800-1000 clas per day, on ocassion up to 1200 of high Protein, low fat, low cal food. By eating a palm size meal only 3 times a day, and less than 800 cals your body goes into starvation mode and malnutrition. In between go ahead and have a 60 calorie lowcarb low fat yogurt, or even a Jello 60 cal sugar free pudding if you have a sweet tooth. I almost always have a healthy/low cal snack in between. I was banded Nov. 7 and I still do NOT have a fill. By having these little in between healthy Snacks I feel VERY satisfied and NOT hungry t/o the day. No fill at all and I am down to 200lbs from 226 at pre-op(one week before banding) in 10 weeks I have averaged 2.6 lbs a week!!! That is over 10lbs a month!!! I had never been able to do that!

Have a little healthy snack in between... don't forget your Water first to see if it is thirst or hunger!

I agree with AngelaT...My surgeon said only 3 small meals a day and no snacking...But with only the 3 meals I found I was having a serious problem getting in all my calories that it takes to be losing weight...I have been playing with the idea for awhile now of keeping a couple good choice of snack foods around to grab between lunch and dinner like the little carrots or those little things of cottage cheese or yogart...Having one of those seems to keep me right around my 1000 calories and keeps me totally satisfied until dinner time

Mine told me three meals, too, but also added that if I feel like I need it to add a Protein Shake or half a Protein Bar as a snack in between. I typically have a Protein shake for Breakfast, a banana or a yogurt mid-morning, my lunch, half a protein bar or a little cottage cheese mid-afternoon and then my supper at night. I am still amazed that I am not hungry at night. That was always my downfall pre-band. One thing I have come to realize that a lot of times I used to confuse thirst with hunger. I sip the flavored Dasani or a Crystal Light all evening long and I have come to realize that I probably wasn't really hungry for (fill in the blank here -- ice cream, popcorn, cheesesteaks, cold pizza, you name it) -- but I was probably just thirsty all along. Anyone else have the same experience?

Isn't it amazing how often we eat for reasons other than hunger? I would eat when I was bored, happy, sad, upset, watching t.v., whatever! NOw I only eat when I am actually hungry. What a concept! My doc also suggests 3 meals and no Snacks, but does not put a restriction on the size of the portion. After surgery I was lucky to get a quarter cup of food in, but now I am feeling much more open, and could probably eat a lot more, but I try not to. I am also learning to distinguish between being "satisfied" and being "full" or "stuffed". They say to stop eating as soon as you start to feel full, but sometimes it seems as though I feel full and hungry at the same time! My little stomach feels full, but the rest of it is still rumbling--does that make sense?

Well, I say bullshit to the snacking. If you are hungry-eat. Just make wise choices and yes- keep it small like they say so as not to stretch the pouch. There are great snack options for either high Protein or very low cal. (Jello, SF pudding,...)

I was eating only 3 meals a day and I seemed like I was struggling with hunger and weight loss. Now I eat 3 meals and 2 Snacks. My weight loss has kicked in again and I notice when I keep a little something in my stomach all the time I don't overeat or eat to fast when I do eat. I have just kept playing around with my diet to find a way I can continue to lose and hopefully someday maintain a normal weight. I just feel 3 small meals a day is just not possible for me for the rest of my life. But then thats just me. Congratulations to everyone for your weight loss and lifestyle change.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
