What and When to Eat Before and After Swimming

Recommended Posts

I want to make the most out of my swimming sessions. I swim either early in the morning or late at night (8pm). What should I be eating before and after my swimming sessions? I am primarily trying to lose weight with the swimming (5 months post op). Already lost 115. Any tips would be great.

I'm not an expert and I'm newly post op (7/8 weeks) I try to have a small serving of Protein and carbs before any workout especially swimming. I use to be on a swim team for most my life and I remember always eating fruit and protein before the meets. I'm so thankful that swimming doesn't make me hungry any more, pre-op I felt like I ate like a cow after swimming. I'm trying to do research right now on what I should consume pre and post workout since we eat such little in calories and in the gym I give it my all.

I swim as and I mix that with cardio machines and weights before I also play soccer. I was told by my doctor and trainer to get in some complex carbs 20-30 minutes before my workout it will help with getting in a better workout with out hitting a wall. It had worked he also advised me to try regular Gatorade about 8-12 ounce before as that complex carb and it has worked!!

Thanks for posting this and also on the other thread as well. I started drinking a little bit of Water down prowler aid after my workouts to restore of what was sweated out. Maybe I should switch it to before and find a Protein Powder for after?

That's a great idea!! Don't go with g2 Gatorade get the regular more complex carb in it. The Protein after I can say truly helps me post workout. This had been a learning process for me as well!! 78 pounds down since June 22 I feel great! Feel free to ask any other questions you may have!! Good luck.

The Protein Shake especially at night is a good idea after your workout versus eating a meal with Protein in it. It will be easier to process and increase metabolism while you sleep.< /p>

Yes actually I was a 420 pound man 3 weeks before my surgery in total I have lost 88 pounds in less that three months! My doctors are very happy but I stick to the meals and portions and I hit the gym 4-5 times a week! I'm was a weird situation I actually was already swimming more than a mile 4-5 times a week before surgery. Also, doing three miles on elliptical and killing it on a bike! Stick with it stay focused and your success will very rewarding.

Yes and I've been lucky enough that I workout late so when I get home I get two in one 39 minutes after my workout which they say is the best and right before bed! Lol. I have gotten actually pretty creative with my protein. Since my pro7 is no good no after taste and I love Peanut Butter I have started putting a teaspoon of PB2 in my protein and it's go good just like Reese's lol! If you haven't tried pro7 try it.. It's 34 grams of protein and it's very very rewarding as far as Vitamins and extras! It's pricey but worth it! Also if you haven't had pb2 get it!! It's 80% less fat then regular peanut butter!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
