How long were you off work?

Recommended Posts

Sorry if this is a repeat question. I know everyone's recovery time is different, so I was just trying to get an idea how long it was necessary to be off work. I have a desk job btw. Thanks for your input. I was thinking 3 weeks, us that realistic?

I was back to work after 2 weeks...and I had absolutely no problems.

I had surgery on a Tuesday and was back at the office Monday (6 days) I felt fine, a little tired after the day, but I expected that.

Good luck!

I have a desk job as well and took my 3 weeks. I probably couldve gone back after 2 though but I was still fighting feeling weak from limited calories but by 3 weeks I had that all under control.

I'm really glad someone posted this. I have a desk job--unless I have to travel which I do very frequently. I typically have a 20 lb backpack on me, plus a rolling bag that I take, that I then have to haul all over the place, lift into the overhead bin, walk all over the airport, etc. Not to mention, figure out how to eat liquids, or semi-soft foods in airports.

How did others deal with this? I'm wondering if I should just turn down any travel for a 3 weeks, or if I will be good to travel before then? Again I too realize everyone is different but looking for guidelines. Thanks!

I scheduled my leave from July 30th to August 16th. I'm a Nurse, but I don't do any Patient lifting or turning (I'm a Psych Nurse and only work from the eyebrows up :))

I'm hoping 2 weeks will be enough.

Surgery Thursday. Half day at Monday. Full day Tuesday. No lifting and just a desk job though.

Personally, I have to take 8 weeks off. My surgeon has an 8 week lifting restriction of nothing over 5 lbs. I am not allowed to work with a restriction like that, but likely have short term disability. I am expected to get quite bored, cuz I know I will be ready to go back way before that. The only silver lining is I will get through my liquid and purée stages and be moving to more "normal" foods by the time I am back to work. That will make things easier.

I took 3 full weeks off then went back to work 1/2 days the first week back. This is a major surgery, I felt it was important to take the time to let my body and mind heal... And it was definitely easier to get through the puréed phase at home!

I asked and asked and was told repeatedly that it would be two weeks. Two weeks were up, I return to work, check emails, and find one from HR saying I was approved for 3 weeks! :D

Honestly tho, it was 1 week of recovery and two weeks of vacation!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
