Losing weight pre-op

Recommended Posts

I know that some people are required to do a pre-op diet, but it seems like everybody is losing weight before they have the surgery and Im confused as to why. Am I the only person that feels the need to eat everything in the world that I may never be able to eat or not like anymore after the surgery? I know the surgery is not a quick fix and I have to get my eating habits under control and all that, so it is like I am having a final farewell to food that I actually enjoy, as I feel it will no longer have a place in my new life, or my tiny sleeve. Did anybody else go through this? I had lost a bunch of weight because I was on medifast but the idea of eating that to the day of my surgery was unbearable, especially given the number of people that cant eat bread and rice. Obviously since I have stopped that I have gained weight (about 10 lbs) and I have started drinking again but I have decided to quit that because Id rather eat the calories and for some reason drinking has not been nearly as enjoyable post medifast. Anybody else on a bit of a binge preparing for their surgery?

Hello angry. I feel u totally!! I too feel like eating, not binging, but eating as I've always done up until my 2 week preop diet. But, my doc, after weighing me our first visit, both he nd his nurse said, from now on u can't gain anymore weight, why? Uk, I've been maintaining this weight for a while now, dropping her or there, but now since they've said that, I'm paranoid about gaining b4 my surgery and I don't have a frekn date yet!!! It makes me so angry, I'm gonna ask them about that my next visit! I'm glad I'm not the only one but I do agree that u shud stop drinking cuz that's prob harder to stop just cold turkey, smoking as well. I don't mind the two week thing so much, yet, lol, but to say no more weight gain and not have a date or finish the visits, what is his point? hmph!!

I was asked to lose 20 before surgery by my surgeon. My dietician is is working on my habits. It all depends on the program/center you go to. Mine is a center of excellence.

Although I am trying not to think in terms of NEVER being able to eat certain foods I enjoy after surgery, it doesn't seem to stop me from wanting to eat all the things I think I will miss. So am I kind of bingee these days?? Yes I am.

I felt like this a little as I waited to be accepted into the program I'm in. I gained a few pounds during that time. My insurance will not allow you to gain weight from the start of the program. I actually weighed in high about two weeks ago after traveling to a wedding and eating very salty foods. B/c I weighed in 1.5 pounds over my starting weight they were going to backtrack me in the program. Since I had been traveling they let me weigh in again a week later and I was 9 pounds lighter. (Water weight!) So I am definitely not feeling like eating everything right now! I'm scared!

One of the main reasons your doc wants you to loose the weight is so that he can shrink your liver so that he has enough room to move around in your belly to do your surgery. Another reason is so that you start to taper off the amount of food that you are eating and trying to get you to come off of the foods that are bad for like soda and high fatty foods. You will still be able to eat the foods that you loved in the past, but in moderation. You new stomach will help you with your portion size, but you will have to retrain your brain to know what is normal after surgery. It is a learning process and anyone that has had the surgery has had to walk the same path that you are starting down. The hardest part is the mental aspect after the surgery.

fp are you already sleeved? I see a ton of people saying they cant eat Pasta or rice because it makes them very uncomfortable. Are you able to eat those things? My surgeon is a center of excellence as well but he does not require any kind of pre-op diet I also am seeing the surgeon on July 18. Good luck nmick!

I was sleeved on February 19 and there are a few foods that I have issues with one is pork chops and another is french fries. Everyone is different. My tastes have changed somewhat. My wife gets frustrated at me because she does not know what to cook any more. It is not because I can not eat those foods, but some things just do not sound good to me in my head. I have had some Pasta and tolerated that fine. I have had rice in a small portion and had no issues.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
