Recommended Posts

Dr. C, there is a patient whose doctor is putting in this new AP band. She said the doctor said that it is softer and will facilitate with faster weight loss. Can you tell us more about this band? Is is available to all, upon request or is it for higher bmi's?

It is called Advanced Platform Lap Bands (Allergan Inc.) formerly Inamed

Thanks,Audree

Hi there, I am that patient. My surgeon said they believe the AP band can facilitate more weight loss, but he didn't say it was fast weight loss. Maybe he means long term. It is supposed to be softer also, ie the actual band. Good luck with your banding. Susannah

In my searching on the net, I think I found something that said it was for higher bmi patients with a thicker stomach. Do you know this is true?

Audree, I am in fact a low BMI patient who is getting this band. My surgeon only uses this band now. I don't know much else about it myself but I will let you know when I find out.

Hi Audree, I think the new band is being offered to both low and higher bmi patients. I am not a surgeon though, I am only going on what my surgeon told me. Hopefully Dr C can chime in with his opinion. Best of luck. Susannah

This band hasn't been released in the US yet so I don't know anything about it. I'm sure it's a good band but the most important thing is that you have a band--whether it's an AP band, Swedish band, Midband, whatever. The differences between them in weight loss will be minimal.

Good luck,

Hi, just to update you all regarding the new AP band. Another patient from an Australian board ( yahoo7.com.au groups Ozband) has had the AP band put in eight weeks ago.

*360 inner balloon

*When Balloon is inflated with saline it fills evenly

* Has seam that stops it from gathering and pinching in certain spots

*Softer side makes it less rigid hopefully resulting in less slippage

*Possibly less risk of erosion

*Port is smaller, which could be good or bad

At the end of the day like Dr C said all bands are good, and who really knows if this band is better than any other until we have future data on its efficacy.

Thanks for the info. I am getting my surgery in Mexico. I am trying to find out if he uses this new band. I know that when I asked for a low profile/mini port , they said he uses them standard.

Some surgeons in the UK are now fitting the new Easyband, Its electronic and no need for needles when filling. Sounds allright to me but what if a emergancy unfill was needed not all the Aand E hospital departemnts would have the other device that controls the fills would they? were as a needle is fairly easily available!

Gday Paige, the easy fill sounds good. I having been wondering how bands are going to be in the future. Hopefully smaller and more space age!

Anybody have any ideas about weight loss surgery products there may be down the track?

I asked about the easy band when I went to my consult, my dr. does the easy band, but just started too a few months ago as a test.

He said he wouldn't do it on me that it isn't plastic, and because we don't have much data on it yet he wouldn't do it on someone my age.

I am having the easyband fitted 11th March.

I was told by the surgeon that it was my decision because they only have about a years data on it. They are hoping in the future that adjustments will be able to be made over the telephone. [obviously there are no 'fills' as such - no saline in the band as it is adjusted electronically] I saw him just over a week ago and he said that I could change my mind at any time up to the op if I wanted to go with the usual lapband. I still think the easyband is the way to go as I am sure it is the future and more people will want the freedom from needles and port infections etc.,etc.

Just remember that all the hype about a new band and how it will be "better" is just that - hype. Long-term statistics are needed to make any sorts of realistic comparisons.

Hey, in 2002 I had the latest, greatest band (the MidBand) which supposedly had less chance of slippage than the LapBand. Long story short - my Midband slipped and I now have a LapBand. :)

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
