Pre op diets and such

Recommended Posts

I've been reading threads and what not and I noticed a lot of people are on some sort of diet before their surgery . Is it something you were told to do or did you just decide to do it on your own? (Like the liquid diets) because I wasn't informed of any diets I should be doing . My surgery is on the 8th of July . It all happened to fast .. My first seminar was end of April/beginning of may and now it's a week away . I feel like I'm so much less prepared than everyone else .

My surgery is July 8th too! As for the pre-op diet, this was something that I was told to do.

I only had a one day clear liquid diet. I had to take a course online and it was part of the handout that I printed out. It said in bold, "clear liquids the day before surgery." Every place is different, but to be sure, contact your surgeon's office and ask. If it is only one day, it isn't too bad! I have seen where some have been on 2 week pre-ops and I praise them because I think I would have gone nuts! LoL!

Per Dr 2 weeks prior I had an 800 cal/ approx 90 g of Protein diet of the recommended protein supplements they sell which included drinks/shakes, hot chocolate, oatmeal, bars etc...Day before sugery was Clear Liquids with no food or drink after midnight.

All that they have told me was not to eat after midnight the night before , which kinda stinks because my surgery isn't until 2:30 in the afternoon . That's all I was informed but I will contact my surgeons office tomorrow to be sure . I was also only required to have a 5 year weight history from my doctor (along with chest X-rays , EKG, and bloodwork)

I had a 6 mos supervised diet requirement from insurance and my surgeon requires a 2 week liquid diet to shrink my liver (eliminates a lot of complications), I will do whatever it takes, and I really have confidence in my surgeon, everyone is different.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
