Not being able to eat meat...

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. I am four weeks post op. I have lost a total of 74lbs since 2/3/13. My heaviest was 376 and now I'm 302. On 6/3/13 I weighed in on my surgery date at 330.

I have ran into a problem now. I am allowed to eat soft and puréed meats. Every time I eat any type of meat (plain, no seasoning) I get sweaty, nauseous and runny stools. I have to lay down right after. The most unpleasant feeling I have experienced in a long time. Worse than the flu. I won't dare step inside a restaurant because of this. Could this be dumping syndrome? I haven't found much info on dumping with the sleeve. Any help would be so helpful. Veggies have become my best friend now :)

I have had this feeling before and it was after I had eaten too much. I did not try meats until almost a month out. You might want to hold off a week or so on the meats. I am almost four months out and I still can not eat pork chops, the meat is just too dense for my stomach.

It is a form of dumping. I had it the first time I tried fish - any type of meat is a dense Protein - it will take your body longer to adjust. You may need to wait a few weeks, and then try again - but only start with a bite at a time and work your way up!

First I would ask if you are maybe taking too big of a bite and are you chewing really well? The paperwork I got from my NUT said to take bites the size of a pencil eraser. Second, are you trying beef? I was also told by the NUT that beef is that last thing you are able to tolerate and probably can't until about 6 months out.

Hope you figure it out soon and feel better!

I had it once. I ate too much and too quickly and learned my lesson. It was the worst feeling. Like you say..as if you had the flu.

May want to hold off with meats for another week or so until you get used to eating slower or less. When you eat meat/protein you won't be able to eat anywhere near as much as what you do with other foods

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
