BMI of 39 - anyone have to gain weight for the insurance to cover

Recommended Posts

Hi! I'm new here....wondering if anyone had to gain a little weight to be covered by insurance? I am 5'6" and 241 and in order to be a 40 I'd have to gain six pounds. I don't think I have any co morbidity. Healthy as a horse, just fat!!!

You sound just like me... I had no co-morbidities and am perfectly healthy and I had to gain about 8 pounds to be approved. It's beyond ridiculous, but a necessary hoop. I wore the heaviest clothes I had, left my jacket (with car keys in the pocket) and shoes on to get weighed. As soon as they record you at a 40 BMI, you can start losing. I've even heard of people wearing ankle weights on their weigh-in! Do whatever it takes!

How did you gain? I know it sounds silly, but I've been eating crap for two days and I guess you are what you eat because I feel like crap! Ive only gained 3 lbs. usually i can just look at bad food and gain weight. I usually eat very healthy, just too much, thus the weight gain. I know I'll gain it eventually, but this sucks! I've never purposely gaîned weight!

I wore heavy clothes too. Kaiser requires 40 BMI fully clothed.

I only had to gain about 5-6 pounds but by trying to gain just that I ended up gaining 20 =\ but whatever, now I have to loose it. I also have Kaiser which requires a 40 BMI.

I was in the same boat. I was lucky to have my appointment in January, SO I wore heavy clothes, drank 16oz, ate something, had heavy jewlery on, and some change in my pockets. Hahah every ounce counted. I weighed in with a BMI of 40.3.

At least you're able to gain weight to be approved. With my insurance you bave to be over 40 BMI for 5 years!

I had to gain weight. Got the whole thing started and decided I didn't want to wait 6 months (again) and got my surgery in Mx.

I think my insurance is different, sounds like they record my last weigh in. I started at bmi of 40.4 and I have actually gone up a couple pounds so I am now at 41, so I am crossing my fingers that doesnt affect my outcome. My Drs told me not to drop below 40 during the 6 months, its actually been very difficult. I keep bouncing around the same 2-3 pounds. This has been the longest and fattest 6 months of my life!!! :)

I would've had to gain 18 lbs to get to 40 and I just couldn't do it. I just sucked it up and went to Vegas as a self pay. Just got home Friday.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
