Anyone else have to wait to drink anything after the barium test

Recommended Posts

Aloha! I am one day post op. I am actually laying the in Nova Hospital in Tijuana as we speak. I had my lapbad removed yesterday and my sleeve done. I absolutely love my doctor and his assistant--Doctor Lumban and Doctor Almejandraos (sp). I am in a nice clean, quiet hosptial 1/4 a mile from the border. My gas pain has been to a minimum (cross my fingers). In the morning I am doing the barium drink and then heading home. My drs won't let me have anything to drink, even Water, until the pass the barium test.

Did anyone else have to wait? I'm not deydtrated or anything since I am on an iv.

I had to wait 24 hrs to drink anything post surgery then they started me on Water for the first day; 15 ml (1/2 an ounce) every 15 minutes while I was awake. Day 2 was Protein Drinks 30 ml every 15 minutes. I know there are huge variances in the instructions received from different surgeons. I find it helpful to ask "why?" when a rule doesn't make sense to me.

Me too. Nothing but the glycerin swabs. If they haven't given you some ask for them.

I had to wait but they finally let me have ice chips the night of my surgery. Ice never tasted so good!

I had to wait until leak test the next day...nothing but glycerin swabs and they let me have ice chips, but I had to spit out instead of swallow....boy, was my mouth dry, but that is already a distant memory and surgery was 5 weeks ago.

Hmmm I wonder if I was supposed to spit out my ice. No one told me that. Oops....

Nothing but swabs here too. No ice or anything until I passed my barium swallow which I did not pass. I then had to be npo for another 24 hours.

Mine is the same as Catherine707. Apparently I don't get anything.... No ice, no swabs, I am apparently not even allowed to have chapstick and no one who comes into my room is allowed to have anything, not even a bottle of Water. I was told the reasoning was, they don't want anything triggering gastric juices, they just want the stomach to rest for 24 hours. The practice has never had a leak so I will follow their rules.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
